Solidarity race in Valencia: thousands of volunteers came to bring aid to those who have lost everything

What happened in the Valencia region is dismaying. The violent flood that hit Spain, caused by a self-healing and stationary thunderstorm as explained by the experts, it triggered a vortex of death and destruction.

But alongside the heartbreaking images that come from a country on its knees, there are others that instill hope. They are the faces of thousands of volunteers who have come to help wherever there is a need for an extra pair of hands.

A river of people crossed Valencia to reach the flooded areas on foot. They are boys, women and men of all ages and they set out to help. They wear rubber boots, capes. They have shovels, buckets, smiles and a lot of good will.

They shovel mud and clean up homes in a solidarity contest that has moved the whole world. Their invaluable contribution has been dubbed by the Iberian media a “good wave” in the disaster the state is facing.

The response was also immediate Valencia CF, who put himself at the service of the province in collecting food and basic necessities. By collaborating with the Valencia Food Bank, the club has given full availability to use the Camp de Mestalla as a base from the first moment.

From 10am to 7.30pm athletes and volunteers welcome donations. Bottles of water and large quantities of food are delivered to deal with the emergency and not leave anyone alone.
