Sperm whale giving birth filmed for the first time: watch as 11 females join forces to help the calf breathe

In the heart of the Caribbean, off the coast of Dominica, researchers witnessed a very rare scene: the birth of a sperm whale documented in the open sea. The footage, taken with drones and underwater microphones, captured every phase of the event, transforming an almost impossible to observe moment into an unprecedented scientific testimony.

The birth lasted just over half an hour, but what happened immediately afterwards surprised scientists: a group of 11 adult females organized themselves to support the newborn cub and help it breathe, showing a level of social cooperation never documented with such clarity.

The newborn cannot swim: the group keeps him on the surface

For a mammal that lives in the sea, being born means immediately facing a vital challenge: reaching the surface to breathe. The little sperm whale, just born, is not yet able to swim with sufficient strength. The images then show the females taking turns holding the newborn, gently pushing it upwards and keeping it at the surface of the water. This behavior was repeated for over an hour, with surprising coordination: some females supported the baby, others acted as a protective shield around the mother, creating a real collective assistance network.

Cooperation even between unrelated individuals

The most surprising detail concerns the composition of the group. The 11 females belonged to two distinct subgroups, not all closely related. Yet, during the birth, they came together to form a close-knit team. In sperm whales, social relationships are complex and long-lasting, but such an extensive level of cooperation suggests a shared evolutionary strategy. Helping the newborn does not just mean protecting an individual, but strengthening the stability of the entire group, increasing the chances of collective survival.

An ancient and profoundly social behavior

Scholars hypothesize that this type of cooperative care may have very ancient origins, perhaps dating back to tens of millions of years ago, when the first toothed whales appeared. Some cetaceans are known to raise their young, but observing such organized group collaboration is extremely rare.

After the first few hours, the group gradually dispersed, returning to its normal subunit structure. But the images left a profound mark: complex animal societies exist beneath the surface of the oceans, based on relationships, collaboration and mutual assistance. In the abyss, survival is never individual, but the result of extraordinary team work.
