Stop unregistered speed cameras, from today 29 November they will have to be turned off, what will happen

Stop to the first census of Italian speed cameras, announced by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, after closing the platform dedicated to data collection, active until yesterday 28 November. Local authorities and law enforcement agencies that have not communicated the data of the Italian speed cameras will therefore have to turn off these devices from today 29 November, with the cancellation of all fines that may have been imposed.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport informs that the official list of speed detection devices and systems authorized in the national territory is online – we read on the website of the Dicastery itself – The publication comes at the end of the time foreseen for the national census. Today (28 November. Editor’s note), in fact, the deadlines for sending data by the administrations and bodies on which the traffic police agencies depend expire. This is an essential step to guarantee the full legitimacy of use of the tools for verifying speed limit violations

The speed camera census platform

With decree no. 305 of 18 August 2025, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport sanctioned the establishment of a digital platform for the transmission of data relating to devices or systems for ascertaining violations of speed limits (speed cameras).

Then last September 29th, Ministerial Decree n. 367 made this platform operational, with which local authorities and law enforcement agencies had to communicate within 60 days all the details regarding the speed detection devices (location, conformity, model and approval).

“The communication of data relating to the devices or systems referred to in paragraph 1 by the competent administrations and bodies is a necessary condition for the legitimate use of the devices”

it was clearly read in the text (art. 1 paragraph 2)

What happens from today 29 November 2025

Starting from Saturday 29 November, therefore, non-census speed cameras are, in fact, illegitimate and the fines imposed by these devices in the census will be for all intents and purposes null and void.

But not everything is “solved”.

However, the problem of approval still remains – explains Codacos – The speed camera chaos has now lasted for 20 months, since the Supreme Court in April 2024 established the nullity of fines imposed by approved but not approved devices. Today, almost 60% of fixed speed cameras and over 67% of mobile ones, in addition to not being approved, were approved before 2017, a watershed date in terms of approval and possible use of the devices, with a consequent avalanche of appeals by fined motorists

The situation is therefore not completely clarified, but the census is certainly a first step.
