The 500 deer of Abruzzo are safe: the appeal against the culling has been accepted

The almost 500 Abruzzo deer condemned to death by a wildlife management resolution of the species with a favorable opinion from Ispra are safe. The ungulates will not be killed because the appeal presented by the animal protection associations was accepted by the Council of State.

Animal rights activists rejoice, having relied on justice from the first moment prevent the massacre of 469 deer, including cubs. It was the judges of second instance who overturned the Abruzzo Regional Administrative Court’s order and suspended the council’s resolution.

The news comes after a first and fundamental victory for the animal rights front. The slaughter of wild animals in Abruzzo had already been postponed due to an “oversight”. The lack of notices from the territorial areas had in fact postponed the start date of the hunting control operations.

Now, with the order of the Council of State of last November 7, the decision is referred to the TAR. But that’s not all. The Council of State pointed out that the Abruzzo Region can evaluate actions aimed at preventing road accidents and mitigating human-wildlife conflict such as wildlife crossings and the installation of fences.

The fact that the Council of State considered our reasons valid fills us with satisfaction because it is proof that we were and are right. The Council of State remains a bastion of legality and respect for the rules, always precious when it comes to curbing policies that go against animals and the environment. We dedicate this victory to the hundreds of thousands of citizens who supported our initiatives in favor of Abruzzo’s deer and to the millions of tourists who flock to the Region every year attracted by its nature and the wild animals that populate it” comment the associations.

The deer, therefore, are once again safe in a battle that promises to continue to be long and tortuous and which has united citizens from every part of Italy. Over 136 thousand signatures were collected in a petition launched for Abruzzo’s deer.

Animal rights organizations are confident in decisions that are more respectful of biodiversity and in alternative measures, also noted by the Council of State. Doubles cannot and must not be a solution.
