They are called “The Bottle Houses” and the name says a lot about the building material used by the creator of these houses, Edouard Arsenault. They are found in Canada, on Prince Edward Island, and today they are a popular tourist attraction.

They were built with 25,000 glass bottles of various colors. Edouard had this brilliant idea after receiving a postcard depicting a glass castle that his daughter had come across during a trip to Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
Enthusiastic about that innovative and original project, he decided to start collecting bottles from his community, asking for them from a local restaurant, dance halls, friends, relatives and neighbors.

After collecting them, he spent an entire winter cleaning them and removing labels in the basement of his home. In 1980, at the age of 66, he started construction work.
Soon many people noticed what he was doing and encouraged him to turn the complex into a tourist attraction. Thus it was that in 1981 the first Bottle House was opened to the public. Today the other buildings can also be visited.
A truly spectacular project, even more beautiful because it is in the name of creative recycling.
