In the suggestive natural setting of Etna Parka UNESCO World Heritage Site, now stands a symbol of unity and brotherhood between peoples: the Stele of Peace of the Mediterranean. The two meter and 40 centimeter high sculpture, made of lava stone by the Sicilian artist Nicola dell’Erba, was inaugurated last Sunday among the birch trees of the path of Sartorius Mountains.
The sculpture celebrates the strength of the volcanic earth. At the center, the surfaces of the blocks meet in a shiny oval, symbol of a vital core and balance. ‒ explains the sculptor ‒ This oval, polished to a mirror, reflects light, representing peace as a value that radiates and renews itself.
The two blocks, originating from the same eruption, are joined by a third block and almost seem like faces looking at each other and communicating.

The idea of the initiative was born from the Rotary Club Passport Mediterraneè in collaboration with 8 clubs in the Etna area of District 2110. To better express the concept of peace in the Mediterranean, the two coasts were identified which, when looking at each other, can be a memory for all , reflection, representation of “bridge of peace” and the reduction of inequalities.
The choice of the Sartorius Mountains path as the place to install the stele was not accidental; it is, in fact, one of the most fascinating and popular routes in the Etna area, where you come across clearings rich in endemic species such as birch trees, chamomile, fragrant tufts of Tansy and pulvini, and the iconic Saponaria, whose “cushions” of flowers pink that emerges from the black lava stone offer an incredible sight.
