An iron door, a silent courtyard and a phrase written on a wall: “In the midst of difficulties, opportunities arise.”
This is the image chosen by the Bolzano prison for one of its first posts on Instagram, inaugurating – for the first time in Italy – a pilot project that brings life behind bars to social networks.
For six monthsthe prison in via Dante will tell the story of the daily life of the people detained: the training courses, the renovation works, the projects with the Municipality and with local associations. An experiment of communication And transparencybut also a gesture of trust in a place where too often only silence and prejudice are heard.
A “social” revolution within the walls
The prison cannot remain silent – explains director Giangiuseppe Monti. Here too, paths of rebirth are being built and we want to tell them.
After years of crisis, revolts and degradation, the Bolzano institute is changing its face. Renovations, professional workshops, agreements with the Red Cross and the Municipality, even meetings with the players of FC Südtirol to talk about sport and social reintegration.

Now, with an Instagram page and soon also Facebookprison opens a window on the world.
No viral videos or selfies behind bars, but sober images and words that tell a story another possible reality: that of those who, despite being detained, study, work and try to build a future for themselves.
A clear message: prison is not just punishment, but also growth, treatment and prevention.
Because we need to talk about it
The goal is not to “spectacle”, but restore humanity and transparency to an institution that often remains invisible.
The news only tells about emergencies – says Monti – but in here there are people who change.
The project will last six months and, if successful, could become a model for other Italian institutes, where digital communication is still a taboo. Behind each post, there will be a mixed editorial team: prison staff, educators and volunteers, all committed to carefully choosing what to show, what to tell, and how to do it.
The advantages of a connected prison
Opening a social profile for a prison may seem like a small detail, but in reality it is a huge step. It means break the wall of isolationto show citizens that even behind bars there is life, commitment and rebirth. It can help reduce stigmato strengthen the bond with the external community and to make people understand that detention is not only punishment, but also re-education.
Furthermore, digital transparency can help better monitor internal conditionsenhance virtuous projects and attract collaborations with bodies and associations. A prison that communicates, after all, is also a prison that takes on the responsibility of telling its story and being seen.
But there is also a dark side
Yet, the arrival of social media and technology within prison walls also raises serious questions. In many cases, it is a “problem” that not everyone knows or pretends not to know. If on the one hand the official communication it is an instrument of openness and trust, on the other hand there is also the uncontrolled and sometimes tacitly permitted use of personal cell phones by the prisoners.
In recent years, thousands of illegally introduced smartphones have been seized in many Italian prisons, often with the help of drones or external accomplices. Through these devices, some inmates have the opportunity to maintain direct contacts with organized crimemanage illicit trafficking, coordinate extortion or threaten witnesses. And yes: they also publish personal content with the specific purpose of underlining their importance even from behind bars.
A system that risks undermining internal security and making reintegration and control efforts futile.
