Frankie, a young female flamingo born on 1 July 2025 at Paradise Park in Hayle, Cornwall, surprised everyone with her escape. Although the feathers on her right wing had been clipped, the little girl managed to fly away from the park’s fenced garden on November 2, starting a journey no one would have imagined. The first sightings occurred near Porthtowan, about 21km from the park, but the real twist came days later.
Sanctuary officials confirmed they had received credible reports of the flamingo along the coast of Brittany, France. This means Frankie flew more than 320km away across the Channel. This shift highlights the surprising flight capacity and endurance of flamingos, even in young individuals with physical limitations.
It is now located in a protected estuary
Paradise Park said that although there is a population of greater flamingos in the south of France, the juveniles look very similar to Frankie. However, the fact that the right wing feathers were cut represents a crucial clue to confirming the bird’s identity. Park staff are awaiting further photos and videos to officially confirm that it is Frankie.
The sanctuary’s management expressed amazement and relief at seeing her in good shape, saying they were amazed that she had traveled such a great distance. Frankie seems to have settled into a protected estuary, where she will be able to feed safely. To be more certain that it is indeed her, anyone who spots the flamingo is invited to send photos or videos to the park.
A flight away from the fences
Il fenicottero dei Caraibi, come Frankie, รจ noto per le lunghe zampe, il collo elegante e il piumaggio rosa distintivo, colorazione derivante dal consumo di alghe e gamberetti. These birds can live up to 40 years and, although they are generally not migratory, they can move to find food or due to climate changes, such as drought or environmental variations.
Frankie, the first chick raised by his parents in Paradise Park, has become a small celebrity. Her journey, despite the difficulties, has in fact made her a symbol of those who choose freedom. Frankie preferred the vastness of Brittany’s estuaries rather than a sanctuary where, no matter how protected and well cared for, she would always be confined to a very specific territory. Now, however, he can explore nature, the real one, and live together with his peers in a colony.
