The secret spas of Milan really exist: underground in Piazza Oberdan there is an abandoned Art Nouveau masterpiece

Under Piazza Oberdan, in the beating heart of Milan, where Corso Buenos Aires intersects the monumental toll booths of Porta Venezia, there is a hidden treasure that few know but that many remember: the Albergo Diurno Venezia. A place of incredible elegance, silent witness of a golden age, which after decades of abandonment is experiencing an extraordinary rebirth thanks to the commitment of the FAI and the collaboration with the Milanese universities.

A masterpiece by Portaluppi in the heart of the city

The Albergo Diurno Venezia is an architectural jewel suspended between Liberty and Art Deco, inaugurated in 1926 and designed by Piero Portaluppi, the same visionary architect who gave Milan extraordinary works such as Villa Necchi Campiglio, the Hoepli Planetarium and the cathedral churchyard. This multifunctional service center represented the response of “great Milan” to the needs of a city in full development, a place where travelers and citizens could find all the comforts of the modern era.

Spread over 1200 square meters underground, the Diurno was divided into two souls: on one side the spa, with luxury bathrooms equipped with bathtubs and showers accessible from parallel corridors; on the other the artisans’ hall. Each room was embellished with refined mosaics, fountains, statues and fine furnishings that created an atmosphere of accessible luxury. In addition to public toilets, it housed a hairdressing salon, a post office, a travel agency, a photography studio, a typing service and a laundry: a small underground world that beat to the rhythm of Belle Époque Milan, open from 7am to 11pm.

The rediscovery of a forgotten heritage

Falling into disuse after the Second World War, the Albergo Diurno remained closed and forgotten for decades, until in 2014 when the Municipality of Milan entrusted it to the FAI. Even before starting the restoration work, the Foundation chose to open a “knowledge construction site”, involving the La Statale University and the Polytechnic of Milan in a multidisciplinary research project which saw the collaboration of thirty scholars. The result was the volume “Albergo Diurno Venezia. History, architecture and memory in the underground of Milan”, a kaleidoscope of stories and images that restores the charm of this metamorphic and surprisingly elusive place.

The research followed two main lines: a historical approach linked to the chronological development of the place and an in-depth analysis of parallel phenomena, due to contemporaneity or spatial contiguity. What emerges is the portrait of a kaleidoscopic reality, endowed with an unspeakable bewitching power, which continues to reveal itself under new perspectives with each investigation.

How to visit the Albergo Diurno Venezia

The Albergo Diurno Venezia is currently closed to the public for renovation works, but in 2021 it was announced that it will become the headquarters of the National Museum of Digital Art, with an opening expected no earlier than 2026. In the meantime, thanks to the volunteers of the FAI Delegation of Milan, “Cultural Connections” dedicated to the Albergo Diurno and the Milanese Belle Époque are periodically organized, which allow you to discover the history and charm of this extraordinary place even before its definitive reopening.

For those who want to immerse themselves in Liberty Milan and discover this example of underground urban architecture, the advice is to monitor the FAI website and the city’s cultural initiatives. The rebirth of the Albergo Diurno Venezia is not just the recovery of a historic building, but the return to the community of a piece of collective memory, a place where the voices of a Milan that once was continue to echo, ready to enchant future generations with their timeless charm.
