A crocodile in a Tuscan nursery seems like the plot of an unlikely film, yet in Pistoia the story has been causing discussion for hours. It all started with the report of a citizen who saw a large reptile emerging from the waters of an artificial lake in Masiano, on the outskirts of the city. From that moment on, checks, inspections and checks began involving forestry carabinieri, firefighters and veterinary experts from the Pistoia zoo.
According to the witness’s account, the animal would be about two meters long and would be found inside a basin used for the irrigation of an ornamental plant nursery. The formal complaint presented to the authorities has pushed the police to treat the case with caution, even if at the moment there is no official confirmation of the presence of the reptile. In fact, no obvious traces attributable to a crocodile were found in the surroundings of the lake.
The pond under observation and the hypothesis of the abandoned exotic animal
However, the area remains constantly monitored. The Masiano lake has characteristics that greatly complicate research: the water is muddy, deep and turbid, conditions that make explorations difficult. The possibility of emptying the basin is not ruled out should the checks continue in the next few days without clear results.
In the meantime, a possible escape from the Pistoia zoo has been denied. Among the hypotheses that have circulated in the last few hours is that of an animal illegally detained and then abandoned when it was too large to handle. A theory that, however, experts invite us to take with caution. The Tuscan climate would not be suitable for the survival of a crocodile outdoors, although the presence of numerous air-conditioned greenhouses in the area may have offered temporarily favorable conditions.
The viral photo divides the web between fear and suspicions of artificial intelligence
Making the case even more surreal is the online diffusion of an alleged photo of the reptile. The image quickly went viral on social media, but many observers highlighted unconvincing details. Some anatomical details of the alleged crocodile and even the reflections on the water seem incompatible with a real scene, fueling suspicions that it may be content that has been manipulated or even generated with artificial intelligence.
It wouldn’t even be the first episode of its kind in Italy. In recent years, sightings of panthers, alligators and other exotic animals that have never really been confirmed have multiplied. In several cases, simple errors of perception, jokes or false images shared online were hidden behind the alarm. In Pistoia, however, the mystery remains open. And until the lake provides a definitive answer, the doubt will continue to float together with the dark water of Masiano.
