This is the mistake everyone makes with the dryer (and the clothes stink anyway)

The dryer should be the definitive solution for always having fragrant and soft clothes, an exceptional invention that promotes the success of laundry. So why do we often end up with clothes that give off an unpleasant, almost musty smell, even after having carried out a complete cycle? The problem is not in the appliance, but in the way we use it.

The filter: the first ignored culprit

Most people clean their dryer filter once a month, if that’s OK, some even do it less frequently. This represents the first serious mistake, given that the filter should be emptied after every single use: the accumulated lint blocks the air flow and creates the perfect environment for the proliferation of bacteria and mold.

When the filter is clogged, hot air struggles to circulate, so clothes stay damp longer and develop that characteristic stale smell. Simply open the filter door, remove the layer of lint with your hands and you’re done. A thirty second operation that completely changes the final result.

Excessive load

Filling your dryer to the brim seems like a smart way to save time and energy. In reality it produces the opposite effect, because the piled clothes prevent the hot air from reaching every fiber of the fabric. As a result we will have some areas that will remain humid, while others will overheat.

The rule is to fill the basket to two thirds of its capacity. The clothes must be able to move freely during rotation. If when you open the door the items fall out in one solid block, it means that the load is excessive. It is better to divide the laundry into two separate cycles: the results will be significantly superior and, paradoxically, you will save energy because the dryer will work more efficiently.

Absence of maintenance

Cleaning the filter is not enough. The dryer requires more in-depth periodic maintenance that almost no one performs. The condenser, present in heat pump models, accumulates dust and residues that compromise performance, and should be removed and washed with running water at least every three months.

dryer maintenance

The condensation water tank requires particular attention, because stagnant water becomes a breeding ground for microorganisms responsible for bad odors. Empty it after each use and wash it weekly with water and white vinegar to prevent the formation of algae and limescale deposits.

The door seals collect moisture and dirt, therefore, wiping with a dry cloth after each cycle will prevent mold from forming in critical areas. Once a month, it is worth cleaning them with a solution of water and baking soda.

Other errors that make the situation worse

As if that wasn’t enough, sometimes other serious mistakes are made that can further compromise the situation:

How to behave

Adopting a consistent maintenance routine completely transforms your dryer experience. Cleaning the filter after each use, respecting the recommended loads, emptying the water tank and scheduling thorough monthly cleaning guarantees clothes that always smell fresh and an appliance that is efficient over time.

Do you want to know one last trick? Inserting a clean tennis ball into the drum helps the clothes move better and reduces drying times, don’t forget it! And remember that investing very little time in caring for your dryer will reward you with perfect laundry and lower energy bills.
