In the heart of the Virunga National Park, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, nature has given us an event as rare as it is precious: the birth of twin mountain gorillas. The babies, both male, were born on January 3, 2026 and, according to park officials, are in good health, as is their mother. A fact that cannot be taken for granted, given the delicacy of multiple births in this species.
The female who gave birth to the twins is called Mafuko and is 22 years old. It is not the first time she has faced a similar ordeal: in the past she had already given birth to twins, who however did not survive. This time the situation seems different and experts are monitoring his every movement extremely carefully. Mafuko belongs to the Bageni family, one of the most important groups of the Virunga, which thanks to these new births now numbers 59 individuals. In such a small population, every single gorilla has an enormous impact on the survival of the species.

Why twins are so rare
In mountain gorillas, twin births account for approximately 1% of births. Pregnancy lasts just over eight months and a female usually gives birth to just one puppy every four years. Looking after two little ones at the same time means doubling the effort: newborns must be breastfed, transported and protected constantly. This is why the first months are considered critical, and any difficulty can turn into a threat to their life.
A fragile but vital ecosystem
Virunga Park, the oldest protected area in Africa, is one of the last refuges for mountain gorillas. It extends over an area of great biodiversity, made up of volcanoes, forests and lakes, but is also marked by armed conflicts, poaching and political instability. In this context, the protection of cubs requires a constant commitment of surveillance patrols and conservation programs.
Despite the difficulties, in recent years there has been a slow but important increase in the mountain gorilla population thanks to the work of the park authorities and the support of international organizations. The birth of Mafuko’s twins is not just good news: it is a promise of continuity, a fragile but powerful symbol of how nature can still resist if given a chance.
