Via Richò and Tuk Tuk from Florence: atypical vehicles in the historic center is prohibited (to protect it from mass tourism)

From October 15th stop to the atypical means of transport intended for tourists, with fines of up to 500 euros. Only electric shuttles, colored in white and for a maximum of 8 passengers, will be allowed: it is the revolution of the Municipality of Florence to curb uncontrolled tourism.

The decision comes in response to the need to rigorously regulate tourist transport in an area that is World Heritage Site and which in recent years has seen a proliferation of conventional on conventional vehicles which have become a symbol of mass tourism.

According to the new regulation, tourist transport by these vehicles will be prohibited throughout the UNESCO area, with one exception: the electrical tourist shuttles. However, these too will have to comply with a series of stringent requirements. They will only be authorized if equipped with a maximum of 8 passengers, if painted in white, if equipped with all the necessary safety devices and, above all, if headed to travel and tourism agencies. In addition, these shuttles can only operate on two itineraries set by the Municipality.

The initiative is the result of the collaboration between the Department of Tourism, led by Jacopo Vicini, and the Mobility Department, at the head of which is Andrea Giorgio. The stated goal is to regulate tourism transport in the UNESCO area, establishing precise rules to guarantee security for those who use these services, but also to protect the well -being and livability of the city, particularly precious for residents and visitors who try to use them without being overwhelmed by chaos and traffic.

This intervention is based on article 91 of the Tuscan regional law on tourism, which allows municipalities to regulate tourism transport within its territory. The law, while lifting some objections from the government, resisted the appeal at the Constitutional Court, as it did not include the provisions covered by the dispute. Therefore, thanks to this regional rule, the Municipality of Florence was able to act independently to define a specific regulation for the historic center.

The two itineraries on which 12 shuttles will be authorized respectively:
