Wear a tank top bought on Shein and the skin is burned: the high risks of low -cost fashion

Soraya Young, a 25 -year -old British young man, was on vacation in Türkiye with her boyfriend when an apparently harmless detail transformed her holidays into a nightmare. The cause? A simple tank top purchased online on Shein, who in a few hours caused her a serious burning on her back.

The girl shared her experience to warn those who buy low cost fashion: during a five -hour excursion to Marmaris, Soraya wore the tank top over the swimsuit and, despite the regular use of Solar cream SPF 30, the next day discovered a ‘strange burning’ on its back, initially exchanged for a normal sun burn.

The contours of the burning, however, left no doubt: the lesion corresponded perfectly to the shape of the tank top, while the skin exposed to the sun was intact.

Over the hours, the burning began to form blisters and to “lose liquid”, causing intense pain to Soraya. The pain was so strong that the girl was forced to contact a local doctor, who immediately hypothesized a leather reaction caused by the tank top fabric, perhaps in combination with exposure to the sun and chlorine of the swimming pool.

After “sobbing” from pain during the return flight, Soraya then consulted a doctor also in the United Kingdom, which prescribed antibiotics and a soothing cream to treat the burning.

But how can a garment lead to similar damage?

The opinion of dermatology experts

According to the dermatologist Florencia Paniego, some synthetic materials can cause skin irritations, especially if worn for a long time or during physical activity.

Polyester, acrylic, nylon and Rayon tend to trap the humidity and are hydrophobic, that is, they reject the water, preventing the skin from breathing. This creates a warm and humid environment between skin and fabric, favoring irritation – explained the expert.

The dermatologist Leisa Molinari, an expert in skin tumors, underlines that economic synthetic fibers can contain irritating chemical residues, solvents and allergenic dyes.

A high quality nylon or polyester is certified and subjected to cleaner production processes, while low -cost ones often contain harmful substances – he said.

How to avoid risks

To distinguish safe materials from the potentially harmful ones, experts advise to observe labels, smell and consistency. If the fabric has an intense chemical smell or is rough to the touch, it could contain dyes or solvents not suitable for contact with the skin and cause irritation.

Dermatologist Paniego recommends:

Shein’s reply

Informed of what happened, Shein said that it is the first case reported and removed the product from the site and started an investigation. The company, as always in these cases, has ensured that they work with international workshops to ensure product safety. But what did he have to say?

We are faced with the umpteenth episode that confirms the risks related to low -cost synthetic clothing and the need to be particularly attentive to what we buy (and also to where we buy), especially if the garments must be worn by children or people with sensitive skin. Experts recommend prudence and opt as much as possible for natural materials.
