What is this story of drunken deer and why did the Gendarmerie urge you to drive carefully in France

In the Saône-et-Loire department, the traffic police released a message that immediately attracted the attention of motorists, inviting them to drive more carefully. The reason? The presence of wild animals which, at this time of year, may exhibit anomalous behaviour. The reference is to the deer, roe deer and other ungulates that populate the wooded areas of the region.

The “drunk deer” phenomenon

According to the authorities, the cause is linked to seasonal nutrition. In spring the animals feed on fermented fruits, buds and decaying plants, which may naturally contain small amounts of alcohol. This condition can cause effects similar to those of intoxication, making animals less predictable in their movements. This is not a rare phenomenon and is monitored every year, especially in rural and forested areas.

Unpredictable behavior and risk on the roads

The police explained that animals in these conditions can suddenly cross the road, change direction without logic or stop in the center of the road. The authorities speak of behaviors such as sudden crossings, disorderly movements and even immobilization on the roadway, all elements that increase the risk of collisions with vehicles. For this reason, the advice is to slow down, increase attention and anticipate the presence of wildlife, especially in wooded areas.

A social message between irony and prevention

What also made the warning go viral was the tone chosen by the local gendarmerie, who accompanied the report with a video and an ironic message published on social media. The police wrote:

Not all road users are sober… the proof is in the video. If Bambi forces you to drink an aperitif in the woods, maybe it’s not the time to drive as if the road were yours.

A light language, designed to attract attention without losing the seriousness of the message.

The risks for motorists

Several studies confirm that the consumption of natural alcohol present in fermented fruits is common among many animal species. However, the ability to metabolize it varies greatly. Animals lacking specific ethanol enzymes may be more affected, while others tolerate it better. This makes behavior in the wild difficult to predict and potentially dangerous near roads.

The phenomenon, although told in ironic tones, has a concrete impact on road safety. Roe deer and deer are among the largest and most widespread animals in rural areas of France, and their sudden presence on the road can cause serious accidents. For this reason, the recommendation remains clear: in the wooded areas of the region, especially in spring, you can never be too careful when driving.
