Silent beaches: it is boom in the beaches where you cannot speak

What is the point of going to the beach and not hearing anyone talking? By now it is the question of those who arrive in the new “silent beaches” that are popping up everywhere – from the Tyrrhenian to the Adriatic and now even on the lakes. Once upon a time there was the Caciarona beach, people who scream, children who make castles and rackets fly from one part to the other. Today, however, you enter and the first thing you notice is the sign: “Here you speak slowly, as in the library”. No tiki bar with high volume, no rackets in water, no notifications of the smartphone – and yes, you often find the steward who invites you to lower your voice if you exaggerate.

It happens in Tuscany, Puglia, Sicily, Liguria, Lombardy on the banks of Lake Como. And the strange thing? Indeed, on the contrary, on Tiktok there are viral videos of establishments where only the breath of the wind is heard among the umbrellas.

Habitués say that “it is relaxing, even strange at the beginning”. You put yourself in your deckchair, nobody who calls “Gianni! Come here!”, None with ball bluetooth, no guys who challenge those who throw the ball further away. Only silence, well spaced umbrellas, looks that cross as you read or listen only to the water. It almost seems to be in another world, and the beauty is that even influencers now pretend nothing: silent selfies, meditative poses, caption on the “true luxury of silence”.

This year the desire for “silence/nature” is essential, a sign that it is not a fashion for a few snobbish, but a collective need – perhaps after years in which between streaming, traffic and notifications the brain has really saturated.

But the phenomenon does not remain only on our beaches: even outside Italy you can breathe the same trend. On the net there are many reports on the quietest beaches in Europe, from the Balearics to the Frecia, from Portugal to France, where you can find “SSSSSH” signs at the entrance, precise noise limits, relaxation areas where everything goes at a minimum volume. They even prohibit noisy games and invite you to walk slowly so as not to “disturb the quiet of others and also seagulls”. At the sea we almost go to meditate, rather than to let off steam.

Obviously not everyone agrees – try to explain to a child on the beach that cannot be shouted if he discovers that the water is cold. There are those who complain and those who are looking for alternatives, especially families, but in many structures you find the “Kids Allawed” area separated from the super silent part. The rules are clear: those who want true relaxation finds its space, those who casino risk the call. And the nostalgics of the Caciarona beach? They still exist, but they risk finding themselves alone.

In short, it is not just social fashion. It is tiredness, need to stop. And if today the “Silent Beach” is in fashion, who knows, maybe tomorrow in the beach bars the mince of the Mojito will also silence. For now, let’s enjoy this new seaside summer all waves and silences – maybe he wanted it seriously.
