Champagne today: a classic that looks to the future
Gambero Rosso recalls that in 2024, bottles of Champagne shipped around the world reached approximately 271 million, almost 9% less than the previous year. In Italy the drop was 15%, but our country still remains the fourth market in the world by value, with a turnover of around 235 million euros.
Despite these numbers, champagne is certainly not an icon in decline: in Asia the market is growing, and global indicators indicate that the East of the world, together with emerging regions such as Latin America and Africa, will guarantee a rosy future for this wine.
The CIVC (Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne) is also pushing towards greater sustainability: environmental certification paths, reduction of the carbon footprint with lighter bottles and virtuous agricultural practices are making champagne increasingly “green”.
Today 70% of vineyards have an environmental protection certification and organic or biodynamic vineyards represent 3.4%, with a constant growth in conversions to organic.
