In the heart of the province of Messina, the Municipality of Castel di Lucio has decided to give Christmas a different meaning, transforming it into a concrete gesture of international solidarity. The municipal administration has chosen to give up part of the Christmas lights and some festive events to allocate 4,000 euros to humanitarian aid for Gaza, one of the areas most affected by the war today. A choice that breaks the routine of celebrations and invites us to reflect on the value of priorities.
The resources saved were donated to Emergency, an Italian humanitarian organization that has been involved in conflict zones for years with free medical-surgical care and assistance to the civilian population. The decision was formalized with a resolution of the municipal council, which tied the contribution to supporting humanitarian activities in the Gaza Strip. It is therefore not a symbolic gesture as an end in itself, but a targeted intervention, capable of transforming a local sacrifice into real help.
A small sacrifice, a strong message
At the basis of the initiative there is a precise reference: article 11 of the Italian Constitution, which repudiates war and promotes peace. The Administration has chosen to translate this principle into tangible action, demonstrating that even a small community can assume moral responsibility in the face of tragedies that seem distant, but which concern everyone. Giving up some lights doesn’t mean turning off Christmas, but lighting it with a deeper meaning.
The Administration explains that the renunciation was not experienced as a loss, but as a conscious choice. In a time marked by conflict, suffering and destruction, allocating resources to those living under bombs appeared more urgent than any festive display. The idea is simple: indignation alone is not enough, you need to do your part, even when your contribution seems like just a “drop in the ocean”.
Christmas, traditionally linked to joy, family and hope, thus becomes an opportunity to look beyond the borders of the country. Castel di Lucio has chosen to “turn on a light in Gaza”, entrusting to that contribution the hope that those who live in hardship today can find dignity, protection and a future.
