For nearly a century and a half, Coca-Cola’s formula remained one of the world’s most impenetrable trade secrets. But today, thanks to the meticulous work of a YouTuber specializing in chemistry, that veil of mystery may have finally been lifted.

The chemist behind LabCoatz, this is the name of the YouTube channel involved in the venture, dedicated twelve whole months to an ambitious project, that of reconstructing the formula of the famous drink using advanced laboratory techniques. The result? A replica that in blind taste tests proved to be practically identical to the original.

Coca-Cola, invented in 1886 by the pharmacist John Pemberton, has always made secrecy its winning strategy. Unlike other companies, in fact, it chose never to patent the recipe, patents are in fact public documents, and would have exposed the formula to everyone’s eyes. Better to build an insurmountable myth, kept in a vault in Atlanta, where the ingredients arrive without labels from various facilities to prevent any reconstruction.

But how did LabCoatz discover the formula for Coca Cola? And what are the secret ingredients he boasts about?

The YouTuber’s approach was rigorously scientific: mass spectrometry to identify the substances present, comparative sensory tests and precise analysis of all the data. Dismantling such a deep-rooted commercial myth required almost maniacal patience, but in the end the puzzle came together.

And here comes the first surprise: over 99% of Coca-Cola is simply sugar, caffeine and phosphoric acid. Nothing magical, nothing extraordinary. It’s that tiny remaining 1% – the “natural flavours” mentioned on the label – that make all the difference.

Through trial and error, the experiment identified a blend of essential oils that includes lemon, lime and orange, with a touch of tea tree oil to recreate the freshness of coca leaves. To these are added cinnamon cassia, nutmeg, coriander and fenchol, an aromatic compound found in plants such as basil and pine.

But the truly surprising element that the expert found were the wine’s tannins, present in a separate aqueous solution together with vinegar, glycerin, vanilla, caramel coloring and the other main ingredients. Tannins, also present in original coca leaves, do not emerge easily in standard tests and were only identified after numerous failed attempts. Yet it is they who give that characteristic sensation of freshness and balance the overall taste of the drink.

Recreating the formula required precision laboratory instruments and millimeter doses. A minimal error in the dosage could completely distort the flavor. The procedure involves mixing the flavours, adding the aqueous solution, combining it with sparkling water and a refrigeration phase to stabilize everything.

An interesting detail that emerged from the experiment? Once you have overcome the initial investment in ingredients and equipment, each liter of aromatic concentrate costs very little and allows you to produce thousands of liters of drink.
