There is a type of theft that goes beyond the economic value of the stolen property. This is what struck the Idee in Movimento cooperative this morning, when unknown persons stole the bus of LAB 360, the meeting space dedicated to young people with disabilities.
It is not just a vehicle, but an instrument of autonomy, inclusion and hope”, declared Antonella Radicelli, president of the cooperative. Words that describe a deep wound, because that vehicle represented much more than simple transport: it was the bridge between the children and the outside world, the instrument that allowed them to participate in activities, to live experiences that for many of us are taken for granted, but which for those with disabilities represent precious achievements.
President Radicelli does not hide her bitterness:
Whoever carried out this gesture did not cause economic damage to a cooperative: they took away a precious asset from those who are more fragile. He took away opportunities, smiles, freedom.
It is difficult not to share this sense of bewilderment in the face of an act that affects precisely those who most need protection and support.
Faced with this situation, LAB 360 has chosen not to remain silent, launching an appeal to the Palermo community and the institutions:
Help us give back to our children what was taken from them.
Because, as Radicelli herself underlines, hitting the weakest cannot and must not become normal.
A necessary judgment
This episode deserves reflection that goes beyond the news. We live in a society that often proclaims the values of inclusion and solidarity, but then finds itself having to deal with gestures that demonstrate the exact opposite. Stealing a minibus from a social cooperative is not just any theft: it is an act that reveals a worrying insensitivity towards the most vulnerable.
What is striking is the disproportion between the probable gain of those who stole the vehicle and the enormous damage inflicted on those who used it. A minibus can be worth a few thousand euros on the illegal market, but for the guys at LAB 360 it represented the chance to go out, to socialize, to feel part of the community. Those who carry out such thefts perhaps do not reflect – or worse, do not care – about the human consequences of their actions.
The cooperative’s response offers an important lesson. Despite the pain and discouragement, LAB 360 promises to continue its mission: “We will be here, with or without a minibus”. This is the dignity and strength of those who work in the social sector, of those who do not give up in the face of difficulties.
Now it is up to the Palermo community and the institutions to respond to this appeal. Not only to repair material damage, but to reiterate that a civilized city cannot allow its most fragile members to be further penalized. Solidarity must not be just an empty word, but translate into concrete actions.
This theft is a wound to hope, as President Radicelli says. But it can also become an opportunity to demonstrate that Palermo knows how to react, knows how to protect those who need it most, knows how to be truly inclusive. The ball is now in all of our hands.
