Madame Bis, the python abandoned in Milan in 2022, is still looking for a home: Enpa launches the appeal for adoption

Not just dogs and cats. Even exotic animals end up abandoned on the streets. It happened to Madame Bis, a female royal python, found in September 2022 in a small square near Via Astesani, in Milan. The agents of the Greco-Turro police station intervened, alerted by a report: the snake was wandering free, without anyone coming forward to claim it.

Since then she has lived in the reptile section of the Enpa in Milan, where volunteers look after her while waiting for a new placement. The owner has never been identified. And the line between accidental escape and abandonment remains thin.

A docile snake, but not “simple”

The royal python is known for its peaceful and quiet nature. It is not an aggressive animal, but this does not mean that it is suitable for everyone. Madame is about one and a half meters long, could reach up to 180 centimeters and, like many specimens of the species, can live for over twenty years in captivity.

Its management requires awareness and preparation: an adequate terrarium, with temperature and humidity control, sufficient space and specific nutrition, which occurs with frozen prey. Previous experience with reptiles is not necessarily necessary, but it is essential to understand that it is not an “ornamental” animal.

These are animals that should live in their natural habitat and not in captivity as unfortunately often happens. The problem becomes even more acute when they are placed on the market and purchased without full awareness: at that point the priority becomes guaranteeing them dignified and safe conditions.

The phenomenon of abandoned exotics

According to Enpa, the findings of exotic animals are increasing: dozens of hamsters, guinea pigs, parrots and, more rarely, snakes. The problem is also regulatory: there are dedicated structures for dogs and cats, recovery centers for wildlife, but for many exotic animals there is no structured network. There is also a legislative gap that weighs heavily: in several cases there is not even an obligation to register. As long as the trade remains legal, the association underlines, there will be those who buy without really knowing the commitment required.

A responsible adoption, without reproduction

The objective is to find a conscious family for Madame Bis, willing to guarantee correct detention and not allow her reproduction. Interested parties will receive all the necessary information from specialized Enpa staff. For information or to apply for adoption, you can write to adozioni@enpamilano.org.

Adopting a snake isn’t about seeking affection in the traditional sense. The relationship with a snake is not the same as with a dog or a cat. It’s different, quieter, less immediate. But even a reptile can recognize those who take care of it on a regular basis. Madame Bis has been waiting for over three years. Unfortunately he won’t be in his natural habitat, but he now deserves at least a safe and stable place to stay and a second chance.
