From coma to Olympic podium! At 13, snowboarder Jake Canter had a 20% chance of surviving, today he is a champion

A story of courage and determination that leaves you breathless: Jake Canter, a 22-year-old American snowboarder, won bronze in slopestyle at the Milan Cortina 2026 Olympics, crowning an incredible journey that began ten years ago. In fact, as a teenager, a terrible accident left him with just a 20% chance of survival. Today, the medal in Livigno is the symbol of a rebirth that transcends sport.

The accident that changed everything

It was 2016, Canter was only 13 years old and was jumping on a trampoline with friends. A collision in the air caused him to fracture his skull and suffer a brain hemorrhage. The following year, new symptoms — severe ear pain and fainting at home — led doctors to discover a spinal fluid leak from the previous injury, which had triggered bacterial meningitis.

The situation was dramatic: the doctors decided to put him in a medically induced coma and told his parents that the boy only had a 20% chance of surviving. After days of waiting and three very delicate surgeries, including the removal of his right eardrum, Canter began to recover, facing partial hearing loss and a long physical and psychological rehabilitation.

Triumph at the Olympics

Today, ten years later, Canter finds himself on the Olympic podium, behind the Chinese Su Yiming, gold, and the Japanese Taiga Hasegawa, silver. The young athlete, visibly emotional, wanted to remember his story and how he got here:

It’s amazing to be here with a medal around my neck. I really hope I made my thirteen-year-old self lying on that hospital bed proud. This bronze is for him and everyone who supported me.

That medal is not just a sporting recognition, but the testimony of an indomitable will. Canter turned a personal tragedy into a motivating force, finding snowboarding as an outlet and a means to prove that nothing is impossible.

A real example of perseverance and Olympic spirit: from a boy to whom the doctors had given little hope, to an athlete who today shines on the international podium. His story reminds us that sport can be therapy, redemption and rebirth, and that determination, combined with talent, can overcome even obstacles that seem insurmountable.
