During harvesting operations in a cereal field in Castelbelforte, in the province of Mantua, a litter of wolves hidden among the tall vegetation was accidentally hit by a combine harvester. The small animals were probably sheltered among the ears of corn, invisible to the operator of the agricultural vehicle. By the time their presence was noticed, however, it was too late. The impact proved fatal for most of the litter.
The only survivor among the brothers
In the midst of a devastating situation, however, a little hope managed to emerge. One of the puppies actually survived the accident, despite suffering several injuries. The owner of the farm involved in the harvesting operations immediately noticed what had happened.
The woman intervened without wasting time, trying to provide first aid to the little wolf and quickly activating the rescue chain. After contact with ERSAF Lombardia, the regional body for agriculture and forestry services, the Provincial Police Command of Mantua was alerted, which reached the site of the accident to secure the animal.
The race against time to save the little wolf
Provincial Police officers, coordinated by manager Cristiano Colli, recovered the injured puppy and organized an urgent transfer to a highly specialized facility. The young specimen was entrusted to the care of the University Veterinary Hospital of Lodi, one of the national reference points for the recovery of protected wildlife.
Here veterinarians and specialists are constantly monitoring his condition and have started all the necessary procedures to promote his recovery. Although the puppy suffered trauma and injuries, the fact that he managed to survive the passage of the combine harvester is already an encouraging element.
The Carpaneta herd hypothesis
The initial checks carried out by the experts suggest that the puppies involved may belong to the pack of wolves monitored in the Carpaneta Forest area, a vast wooded area located in the San Giorgio Bigarello area, a few kilometers from the accident site. The area has long been the subject of observation and monitoring activities for the presence of the wolf, a species which in recent years has consolidated its presence in various areas of the Po Valley.
An episode that rekindles attention on wildlife
Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident, but an episode that is repeated several times, highlighting how delicate the balance between agricultural activities and the presence of wildlife can be. During the birth period, many animals choose cultivated fields and grassy areas as a refuge for their young, making them particularly vulnerable during agricultural work.
However, the rapid intervention of the company owner, the ERSAF operators and the Provincial Police allowed at least one life to be saved in the tragedy. Now all hopes are entrusted to the veterinarians of Lodi, committed to guaranteeing the little wolf the possibility of returning to his natural environment one day.
