Dust and crumbs hide where clothes can’t reach
Remote controls, computer keyboards, video game controllers, and even some car surfaces have one problem in common: They accumulate dirt in the hardest-to-reach places. Dust, hair, food residues and small crumbs end up between the keys and in the cracks, transforming everyday objects into real receptacles for dirt. The result is not just an aesthetic question. Over time, in fact, the accumulation of residues can make the keys less reactive and encourage the proliferation of bacteria.
Many people try to solve the problem using cotton swabs, toothpicks or compressed air. However, there is a simple method within everyone’s reach that allows you to remove surface dirt without dismantling anything: DIY cleansing slime.
How the soft paste that captures dirt works
The principle is very simple. Slime has an elastic and slightly adhesive consistency which allows it to adapt to the shapes of surfaces. When pressed gently on a keyboard or remote control, it penetrates the small crevices between the keys and traps dust, lint and crumbs.
Unlike a traditional cloth, which can only clean the external part of the surfaces, this soft mass reaches places that are normally difficult to treat. Once lifted, it takes much of the accumulated dirt with it, leaving the object visibly cleaner.
The starch-based DIY version
Those who prefer to avoid specific products can prepare a soft pasta using ingredients easily found at home. A mixture based on corn starch and a little water allows you to obtain a mouldable and compact consistency. The important thing is that the mixture is not too liquid, to avoid leaving residues on the electronic surfaces.
The dough must be worked until it becomes elastic and uniform. At that point it can be placed and pressed gently on the keys, without rubbing forcefully. After a few seconds it is removed together with the collected dust.
Be careful of humidity and residues
Although the method is practical, it must be used with some precautions. Keyboards and remote controls should be turned off or unplugged before cleaning. Furthermore, the slime or cleansing paste must not be excessively moist. A compound that is too wet could in fact leave traces in the cracks or, in the worst cases, encourage unwanted infiltration.
It is advisable to always check that the material used remains compact during use and does not fall apart between the keys. If you notice any residue, it is best to stop cleaning immediately and remove it with a dry cloth.

Regularly cleaning electronic surfaces doesn’t just improve the appearance of the items we use every day. Periodically clearing away dust and debris can help keep keys working better and reduce wear and tear caused by dirt buildup.
DIY slime therefore represents a simple, economical and quick solution for reaching the most hidden corners without resorting to complicated disassembly. A small household trick that, in just a few minutes, helps bring keyboards and remote controls back to a much cleaner and tidier condition.
