The Adriatic Sea is home to beautiful and vulnerable creatures, including sea turtles Caretta carettaoften victims of human activities. But every now and then, a story of hope emerges, a symbol of the collective commitment to marine conservation. This is the case of Trolly, a young turtle who, after a difficult recovery period, has returned free to the waters that call her home.
Trolly was saved from trawling, one of the main threats to sea turtles, which venture to the seabed to feed and rest, ending up trapped in nets. Hospitalized at the Cetacea Foundation, a historic non-profit organisation, she received specialized care before being released on 15 June, in an operation which also saw the involvement of the Guardia di Finanza. A happy ending not only for her, but for an entire community that is committed to the protection of these creatures.
Invisible threats and concrete commitment for sea turtles
With over thirty years of activity and more than 1,000 sea turtles cared for and returned to their natural environment, Fondazione Cetacea is a beacon in the protection of the marine ecosystem. But trawling is not the only danger. Turtles are also threatened by collisions with boats, impacts against rocks during storm surges and, increasingly worryingly, by the ingestion of plastic and microplastics. Every recovery, every personalized treatment path, is the result of the tireless dedication of veterinarians, operators and volunteers.
The survival of these animals depends heavily on collaboration. Fishermen, sea operators and institutions play a key role. A timely report of an injured or accidentally captured turtle can mean the difference between life and death. For this reason, raising the awareness of maritime operators remains one of the Foundation’s absolute priorities, to prevent more turtles from being thrown back into the sea without the necessary care.
Strategic partnerships
Trolly’s story has become the symbol of an even broader collaborative network, which includes the World Sustainability Foundation (WSF) and Roncalli Viaggi. From 2022, the WSF, through the project Save The Turtlesactively supports the recovery, care and awareness activities of the Cetacea Foundation, demonstrating the importance of a holistic approach to conservation.
Roncalli Viaggi, the first Italian company certified by the WSO for sustainable tourism, has also embraced this cause. In addition to supporting numerous environmental initiatives, he contributed significantly to the campaign dedicated to Trolly. A virtuous example is the project High Fivewhich last summer made it possible to donate 5 euros for each trip booked through the agency, transforming tourism into a vehicle of solidarity and sustainability.
A constant commitment to a sustainable future
The liberation of Trolly, accompanied by the turtle Ciccio who was also saved by the Guardia di Finanza, is a moment of celebration, a milestone that reminds us of the power of nature’s resilience and concerted human action. The images of Trolly and Ciccio who set out again, driven by instinct towards their natural environment, are a warning and an inspiration.
However, the battle to protect sea turtles is far from over. Every report, every recovery intervention and every awareness campaign are fundamental pieces of a mosaic that contributes to the survival of a species that continues to face man-made threats on a daily basis. The commitment must be constant, the awareness widespread, to guarantee a future in which our waters are a safe refuge for Trolly and all its peers.
