At the Colosseum like a gladiator: Airbnb’s initiative to relive the emotions of ancient Rome

Airbnb has entered into a collaboration with the Colosseum archaeological park to promote an extraordinary experience that combines tourism, culture and historical reenactment. This project, called “The Colosseum tells its story”, aims to transform the experience of visiting the Colosseum, with a funding of 1.5 million dollars from Airbnb to renovate the museum area and internal exhibition spaces of the Flavian Amphitheatre.

This commitment not only enhances the symbolic monument of the Italian capital, but also allows for tell its thousand-year history in a more immersive way. Furthermore, Airbnb has created an exclusive experience, which can be booked on its platform, which allows visitors to experience the Colosseum like never before.

The collaboration with the Ars Dimicandi associations and the Gruppo Storico Romano will bring a selected group of guests to relive the emotions of ancient Romeoffering the possibility of participating in a philologically accurate reconstruction of gladiator fights inside the Colosseum.

It will be held on 7 and 8 May 2025

The experience will take place on 7 and 8 May 2025with two free sessions for 16 participants per day. Reservations will be open from 27 November to 9 December 2024allowing a selected group to participate at no cost, covering only travel costs.

During the experience, guests will have exclusive access to the Colosseum at sunsetwhen the amphitheater will be closed to the public, and they will be able to explore the underground passages and preparation areas that ancient gladiators passed through before entering the arena. With the assistance of expert re-enactors, guests will also be able to learn fighting techniques used by gladiators, completely immersing themselves in the world of ancient Rome.

This collaboration represents an initiative of great cultural value, allowing participants to experience a sort of “time travel” and to discover the history of the Colosseum in an engaging and authentic way. It aims to connect modern audiences with the fascinating history of gladiators and the cultural significance of the Colosseum, going beyond traditional tourism and turning it into an educational and engaging experience for anyone passionate about Roman history and its epic exploits.
