2025 promises to be a turning point in the fight against climate change. The UN invites us to embark on a journey through the challenges and opportunities that await us, a journey that will take us from the depths of the Amazon to the halls of international tribunals, to beaches submerged in plastic.
First stop: the green heart of the Planet
Our journey begins in Belém, Brazil, where COP30 will be held in Novemberthe United Nations climate conference. Here, in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, world leaders will gather to take stock of the fight against climate change and renew their commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
But the Amazon is not just a suggestive scenario. It is also a symbol of the connection between the climate crisis and the health of ecosystems. Protecting forests, seas and biodiversity is essential to mitigate the effects of global warming. For this reason, the UN will continue to promote “nature-based solutions” (nature based solutions), such as reforestation and conservation of protected areas.
Second stage: the race against time
Time is running out. The goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C is increasingly difficult to achieve. We need concrete actions and more ambitious commitments from all countries.
COP30 will be a moment of truth. Will nations be able to overcome resistance and marshal the resources necessary for a rapid transition to a low-carbon economy? Attention will be paid above all to More industrialized countries, which have the responsibility to lead the transformation and support developing countries.
Third stage: climate justice and finance
Climate change does not affect everyone in the same way. The poorest and most vulnerable countries are the most exposed to the devastating effects of the crisis, despite being the least responsible for greenhouse gas emissions.
For this reason, the issue of climate finance is central. Developed countries have a duty to support developing countries in the energy transition and adaptation to climate change.
2025 will be a key year for making progress on this front. The summit will be held in June in Spain “Financing for Development“, a unique opportunity to reform the international financial architecture and direct more resources towards the fight against climate change. Innovative solutions such as green taxation, carbon taxation and subsidies for renewable energy will be discussed.
Furthermore, the International Court of Justice will rule on the responsibility of states for climate change, an opinion that could pave the way for new legal actions against non-compliant countries.
Fourth stage: face the plastic monster
Our journey now takes us to face another great environmental challenge: plastic pollution. Oceans, rivers and emerged lands are invaded by plastic waste, with devastating consequences for fauna, flora and human health.
In 2025, the UN negotiations for an international treaty on plastics must lead to an ambitious and binding agreement, which includes concrete measures to reduce the production and consumption of plastic, promote recycling and the circular economy.
Fifth stage: the future in our hands
The journey into the future of the climate ends with an awareness: the fate of the Planet is in our hands, underlines the UN. Each of us can make a difference, through our daily choices and an active commitment to a more sustainable world.
2025 will be a year of challenges, but also of great opportunities. If we know how to seize the moment, we will be able to start a real green revolution, which will lead us towards a more equitable, prosperous and in harmony with nature future.
