Do you have an English Bulldog? I am a veterinarian and I will explain the symptoms and diseases to watch out for

A much loved and well-known dog breed is the English Bulldog. Unfortunately, however, from a health point of view it is also one of the dog breeds “more bruised”allow me to finish. It is certainly not among the longest-lived dog breeds, also thanks to the fact that it is one brachycephalic breed.

This must be taken into account when you decide to share your life with an English Bulldog: from the point of view of veterinary expenses it could be a dog that will make you spend a little more than average (and we are not talking about vaccinations, deworming, flea treatments or basic visits, but of expenses due to the illnesses from which he may suffer).

The most common acquired diseases of the English Bulldog

As we said before, the English Bulldog, with its irresistibly cute face, is not a very robust dog breed. You can also sense it when you look at it average lifespan: we are around 8-10 years old. Very few, considering that others molossoid and brachycephalic breeds they live a little longer. For example, the French Bulldog has a life expectancy of 10-12 years, while the Pug has a life expectancy of at least 12-15 years.

Of course, there are English Bulldogs that live beyond 10 years of age, but they are exceptions and not the rule. This is because, in addition to being brachycephalic dogs and suffering from all the problems linked to brachycephalic dog syndrome, they can manifest a series of illnesses congenital and/or hereditary and develop a long series of acquired diseases that go beyond classic diseases such as intestinal parasites, vomiting and diarrhea from poor nutrition and so on.

So let’s find out what the most common acquired diseases are in the English Bulldog, considering that there are pathologies that can be both acquired and congenital. For example, let’s think about the dislocation of the patella or the rupture of the cruciate ligament: there are dogs that are born or inherit alterations affecting the patella and cruciates and dogs in which the pathology is of traumatic origin and does not recognize hereditary or congenital forms.
