“FOMO – Fear Of Missing Out”: on RaiPlay the docu-series that tells the story of the last year of high school (and the anxieties of an entire generation)

The last year of high school represents a unique existential watershed, made up of frenetic pace, very strong emotions and decisions capable of redefining the future in the space of a single night. This dense, gapless universe is at the center of FOMO – Fear Of Missing Outthe new docu-series in 12 episodes produced by OUR FILMS by Gabriele Immirzi, Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani, available entirely on the free RaiPlay platform starting from Thursday 17 September with the publication of the first four chapters (which will be followed by another two boxsets on 24 September and 1 October).

Written and directed by Pietro Daviddi and David Gallerano, the original production of the Rai Digital and Transmedia Content Department follows step by step a group of final year students at the Vittoria Colonna high school in Rome from the first ring of the bell until they graduate from high school. This is not a traditional fiction nor a cold documentary, but rather a real collective diary that dissects the dynamics, insecurities and desires of a generation that constantly lives in the balance between the real and virtual world.

The language of digital natives between teen drama and reality

What makes FOMO – Fear Of Missing Out a profoundly innovative product is its ability to blend the realism of documentary narration with the visual rhythm and aesthetic freshness of teen drama. Between hand-held cameras, natural light, smartphone screens, voice messages on WhatsApp, stories and TikTok content, the series faithfully portrays the way in which young people communicate, expose themselves and face their fragilities.

At the center of the story is performance anxiety and the visceral fear of social exclusion – the Fear Of Missing Out which gives the work its title –, amplified by the cultural obligation of always having to demonstrate one’s worth to the best of one’s ability, be it aesthetics, talent or popularity. The cameras immortalize everyday school life made up of questions, school assemblies, self-management and rites of passage such as eighteenth birthdays, parties, Erasmus, trips and proms, without neglecting the more intimate dimension that develops outside the school walls, inside homes and in family relationships.

An exceptional soundtrack with a song by Ariete

The generational portrait proposed in FOMO – Fear Of Missing Out finds its maximum expression also through music, a central element curated by Warner Music Italy. The official soundtrack is produced by the Vogue duo, composed of Enrico Esposito and Lorenzo Biscione, while an unreleased song by the well-known singer-songwriter Ariete contributes to further enriching the project. With an ironic, direct and unfiltered approach, the series turns the spotlight on crucial themes such as identity, sexuality, absolute friendship and complex first loves, giving voice to eighteen-year-olds who continually question themselves about their own tomorrow with the fateful question: “What will I do when I grow up?”, offering the public an unprecedented, sincere and cutting look at today’s youth.
