How much does it cost to heat a 100m2 house with pellets? Let’s do the math

The cost of heating a 100m2 house with a pellet stove in 2024 reflects a constantly evolving energy picture, where sustainability and efficiency coexist with the shadow of price increases. While on the one hand pellets are still considered a more economical and environmentally friendly choice compared to other fossil fuels, recent price increases could make even the most staunch supporters turn up their noses.

Until 2021, according to Aiel, maintaining a house of this size on pellets was around 390 euros per year, a figure that at the time appeared negligible when compared to the costs of diesel or LPG. A situation that has changed drastically over time: already in 2022, Codacons reported an increase in prices of 175%, with peaks of over 2,100 euros for families who had opted for this heating method. Hence, the need to review the accounts in light of the new market dynamics.

Today, the cost of pellets is variable, but to effectively heat a 100 square meter home, a expenditure ranging between 1,500 and 3,500 euros just for the purchase of the stoveto which are added between 500 and 1,500 euros for installation and around 200-500 euros for accessories. This is without considering the increase in fuel price itself, the impact of which is far from negligible.

The electricity needed to activate the stove and keep the system functioning also affects the annual costs, which can reach around 30 euros per year. Furthermore, maintenance must be added, estimated at around 80 euros per year.

In the current context, where prices fluctuate and stability is a distant memory, opting for a pellet stove still remains a considered choice for those looking to save in the long term. But like any energy choice, it becomes essential to consider price increases and ask for updated estimates to avoid unpleasant surprises.
