IT-Wallet, the digital wallet with driving license and health card arrives: how it works

From 23 October 2024, the IT Walletthe new Italian digital wallet, will be available via the IO app for a first selected group of 50,000 citizens. This project aims to digitize documents as fundamental as driving license, health card and European disability cardallowing users to access their documents in electronic format on their smartphone.

The full rollout for all Italian citizens is expected starting from December 4, 2024with the aim of making the solution fully operational by 2025. The IT-Wallet will be accessible via the Public Digital Identity System (SPID) or the Electronic Identity Card (CIE), offering a safe and legal option for storing and using digital documents.

Initially the digital wallet will be used mainly for physical interactions, such as present your driving licence during a roadside check or the health card at the pharmacy. Starting from 2025, however, the system is expected to expand and include more advanced features such as accessing online services, digital payment and obtaining documents such as residency certificates or electronic health records.

The initiative is part of the European Digital Agenda

This initiative is part of a broader project of the Italian government, which is part of theEuropean Digital Agendawith a deadline of 2026 for all EU countries to adopt a digital identity. The objective is to simplify access to public and private services, facilitating the daily lives of citizens.

The Italian government, however, is anticipating these times, trying to make the IT-Wallet fully operational already by 2025. In the future the IT-Wallet could integrate other official documents such as passport, birth certificates and educational qualificationsthus offering a single platform to manage all digital identities and documents. In addition to simplifying access to Public Administration services, this solution could help improve the efficiency of bureaucracy and reduce dependence on paper documents.
