A pantropical spotted dolphin was photographed soaring through the air with an estimated leap of about 4.5 meters above the ocean surface. An impressive height, enough to push scholars to nickname him the “Michael Jordan of the dolphins”, due to his extraordinary athletic ability.
The image, released by the field research team, also aroused amazement online, to the point that many thought it was artificially generated. But the researchers made it clear: no AI. The shot is real and captures a rare moment of the extraordinary agility of these cetaceans.
An incredible leap compared to size
To understand the exceptional nature of the gesture, just compare it with the size of the animal. Pantropical spotted dolphins normally reach a length of 1.8 to 2.1 meters and weigh around 110 to 115 kilograms. A jump of more than four meters means lifting more than double your length into the air. Proportionally, the researchers explain, it would be like seeing a person jump over a basketball hoop with a single momentum. A comparison that immediately gives an idea of the muscular power and energy released during the leap.
