Lublin, the pearl of the East: why should you be your next travel destination?

Lublin is the capital of Eastern Poland, a kaleidoscope city of experiences that will immediately catch the heart of the most curious travelers. Reachable by plane from Milan and for a few days the route from Rome Fiumicino has also been opened, this distant city of the most popular destinations is all to be discovered.

What to see in Lublin

The castle

Lublin Castle is much more than a monument: it is a silent witness of tumultuous eras. Reconstructed in English neo -Gothic style, this place has crossed centuries of history: home of a prison under the tsars, during the Nazi occupation and even at the time of the Stalinist secret police. Today, converted to the cultural center, it houses the Museum of Lublin, a precious custodian of the city memory.
At its feet, Piazza del Castello turns every year into the stage of the Carnival of street artists, a party that celebrates creativity with jugglers, illusionists, fire eaters and acrobats. An event that returns lightness and magic to a place once marked by suffering.

The old city: a surviving jewel

Lublin Old Town

In just a square kilometer, the old city contains 110 places of historical value. Miraculously preserved for 70% of its original structure, it offers a walk through centuries of architecture: Renaissance buildings, colored facades, small coffee loaded with atmosphere.

The Old Town Hall and the Basilica of the Dominicans are true artistic caskets, where the styles follow one another from the Gothic to the neoclassical. The old theater, second oldest in Poland, continues to live with a dynamic and interdisciplinary repertoire.

Square of the cathedral

Piazza della Cathedrale holds one of the most fascinating treasures of Lublin: the cathedral, the first extraordinary example of Baroque outside the Italian borders. The frescoes of Józef Meyer, court painter of King Augustus III the Sassone, decorate the interiors, transforming the building into a real artistic casket.

An aura of mysticism envelops the Framework of the Madonna in tearscopy of that of Częstochowa, linked to a miraculous event of 3 July 1949. According to tradition, tears appeared that morning on the face of the Virgin, generating a strong emotion among the faithful. The episode, which triggered the repression of the Stalinist power, is still the subject of worship and devotion today.

The sacristy of the cathedral hides an extraordinary acoustic secret: the words whispered in a corner are perfectly audible from the opposite corner, almost an architectural miracle that feeds the already rich aura of mystery.

The hidden treasures of the city

The cathedral treasure is a unique place: a collection of invaluable worship objects, which tells centuries of faith and tradition.
Next to the Basilica, the bell tower of the Trinity stands for 65 meters, offering a terrace with a beast with panoramic views of the city. But just at his feet there is a place full of dark energy: the stone of infelity. According to legend, here a executioner cut his head one day to an innocent man, leaving an imprint of pain that still seems to emit negative vibrations today.

Alveari, fountains and beer: Lublin beyond the old city

Just leave for a moment to discover surprising and original corners, such as Piazza Litewski, the largest in the city. Here you will find a multimedia fountain that in the evening comes alive with games of lights, sounds and colors, attracting families, couples and curious. Around, many strategic benches to relax and enjoy the scene or admire the symbolic monuments of the square: the statue of Marshal Józef Piłsudski, national hero; the monument to the unknown soldier; that dedicated to the establishment of 3 May 1791; and the Obelisk of the Polish-Lithuanian Union of 1569.

A few steps from there, in Piazza Teatralny, there is another place not to be missed: the Center for cultural meetings (CSK). It is a huge modernist building, but the highlight is on the roof: a Panoramic terraces systemcalled by the inhabitants “the hive”, perfect for taking photos, relaxing in the sun or observing the city from above. Inside, the CSK is a real cultural hub: it hosts theatrical performances, concerts, conferences, cinema and exhibitions, with spaces both indoors and outdoors.

Finally, a leap in the industrial past of the city with a must for beer lovers: the Perła breweryin via Bernardyńska. Built inside a former convent of the reformed fathers, it has produced beer from 1846 to 2001. Today it can be visited with guided tours in the basement, where you will discover curiosity about production, historical bottles, labels, and of course, everything closes with a tasting. Because every self -respecting visit … a toast deserves.
