We are in the middle of autumn, with temperatures dropping and the foliage offering shows of color in the garden. Even the lawn, in this period, needs care to better face the winter. Among the most common questions is whether and when to carry out the last mowing before the grass enters the dormant phase. But is it really necessary to cut it even in November?
The importance of weather conditions
Much depends on the local weather. There is no universal rule valid for every area that indicates a precise date for the last cut. However, there are some signs to look out for to understand whether it is time to put the mower to rest or continue for a few more weeks.
How to tell if the grass still needs cutting
The first thing to do is observe the growth process of the grass. In autumn this grows more slowly than in summer, but continues to do so. The lawn should therefore be mowed as usual, although not as frequently as in the summer months. Some people prefer to take care of their lawn in the fall, mowing it once every two weeks.
Until mowing the lawn
As long as the grass grows, you can continue to mow the lawn even in November. An unwritten rule suggests waiting for the first frost before definitively stopping mowing for the season.
The last cut: height and preparation for winter
To prepare the turf for winter, it is essential to make a final cut with a grass height of approximately 5 cm. By doing so, the lawn will be ready to “winter” without problems. Height is especially important in areas prone to snowfall, as stems that are too tall may bend under the weight of the snow, increasing the risk of fungus and disease.
Keep your lawn clean and well-groomed
Another useful tip concerns cleaning the lawn: regularly remove leaves and grass clippings, which otherwise risk suffocating the grass underneath and encouraging the formation of mold. Better yet, avoid using leaf blowers that can damage the turf. The rake remains the most effective and delicate choice, guaranteeing a clean and tidy lawn.
Feed your lawn with potassium
If possible, try fertilizing the lawn with a potassium-based fertilizer, this nutrient will help the grass strengthen against the winter cold, better preparing it for the spring recovery.
