A serious episode of environmental pollution involved Silver Fern Farmsan important one New Zealand agri-food company. The Pareora plant, near Timaru, is at the center of heated criticism for dumping toxic waste directly into the ocean.
The shocking images, shared by SAFE (Save Animals From Exploitation), have highlighted highly harmful disposal practices that threaten marine ecosystems. The videos show wastewater containing blood, fecal matter, nitrogen and phosphorus pour into coastal waters.
This phenomenon not only destroys local biodiversity, but also contributes to the formation of dead zones, oxygen-deprived areas where marine life cannot thrive. The impacts of such activities go beyond local degradation, fueling an ecological crisis on a global scale.
Satellite images clearly highlight the flow of contaminants into the waters surrounding the plant
SAFE, along with other environmental groups, has the immediate intervention of the regional authorities was requestedin particular Environment Canterbury, to stop these practices. Emma Brodie, spokeswoman for SAFE, called Silver Fern Farms’ action a “act of environmental sabotage“, underlining the urgency of protecting the ocean and its delicate ecosystems.
The evidence was further corroborated by satellite images, which clearly highlight the flow of contaminants into the waters surrounding the plant. This has sparked an outraged reaction from local communities and activists, who are demanding greater accountability and transparency from the company. However, at the moment, Silver Fern Farms has not provided an official statement.
The situation is made even more serious by the fact that the company promotes itself as an example of sustainability and respect for the environment. However, these accusations call into question the consistency between their public image and their actual practices.
The environmental impact of livestock activities is in fact now recognized as one of the main ones causes of destruction of ecosystems and Silver Fern Farms’ actions represent a wake-up call to step up collective efforts towards true sustainability to ensure a more responsible future for our planet.
