Fulling your car today has become a real room, although fortunately it seems that in recent weeks there has been a drop in price. A new investigation conducted by Altroconsumobased on the official data of the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Safety (Mase), has sifted through the prices of petrol and diesel in seven Italian cities to understand where the costs are higher and where, instead, you can save. The result? Even just choosing the right distributor can make you put hundreds of euros per year aside.
Descent prices, but the full one remains dear
According to the most recent data of the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Safety, in recent weeks the prices at the pump have recorded a drop.
Altroconsumo He writes:
As confirmed by the Ministry’s data, analyzing the last three weeks the national average petrol price has gone from 1.761 euros per liter on April 7 to 1.7162 euros per liter on April 21: a drop of over 2% in two weeks. Not bad, if you think that only at the end of January the average Italy was equal to 1.83 euros per liter for petrol and about 1.74 euros per liter per diesel. Even the diesel records an important reduction, going from 1.657 euros per liter of 7 April to 1.609 euros per liter recorded on Monday 21 April. The descent is just below 3% and is continuing in these hours.
Where to make the full coast more (or less)
Between 15 and 21 April 2025, Altroconsumo It monitored fuel prices in seven large Italian urban areas: Bari, Bologna, Florence, Genoa, Milan, Rome and Turin, including their respective provinces. For each day, distributors were detected with the lowest prices, with the aim of understanding not only where it is better to refuel, but also which types of system allow to save more on petrol and diesel.
The analysis focused on self-service mode, which is permanently more convenient than servant. In parallel, Altroconsumo also collected the opinions and habits of motorists, thanks to the contribution of the participants in the AC Makers collaborative platform, to better understand how users behave at the time of supply.
What did the investigation discovered? The major savings opportunities are mainly found on distributors located along the main communication routes (state and provincial roads) in the neighboring municipalities to large cities. The most advantageous prices were recorded at the “white pumps” (distributors without logo), distributors related to supermarket chains (in particular Conad) and those located in shopping centers.
In the’Milan areathe average gasoline price ranged around 1.7 euros per liter, with minimum prices between 1.629 and 1.609 euros per liter, allowing saving of over 5%. In Turin, for diesel, there was a minimum price of 1.48 euros per liter, with a similar savings compared to the average of 1.59-1.62 euros per liter.
The situation varies considerably between the different metropolitan areas. In Florence, Genoa and Rome, The convenience focuses more in the peripheral areas of the capital Municipality, near the large communication arteries, with the traditional brands that offer the most competitive prices compared to white pumps. In these areas, the difference between minimum and medium prices can also reach 10 cents per liter, with a saving between 5% and 6%.
Another important variable is the Distance from the city center: in Turin and Bari It is better to supplement in the urban centers of the province along the state and provincial roads, while in Milan the best prices are found in neighboring municipalities. Bologna represents an intermediate case, with competitive prices both in the province and in the suburbs, particularly along the Via Emilia.
In the urban area, where 80% of the respondents to the questionnaire carry out movements by car, the most affordable prices are always found in the peripheral areas and in the large access avenues in the center. In Milan, in particular, there was a widespread distribution of affordable prices, allowing motorists to save regardless of the area where they are.
The areas with the highest prices are generally the central ones of the cities, but there is no shortage of exceptions: high prices can also be on state or provincial roads, as noted in the province of Bari or Florence near the motorways, with prices around 1.8 euros per liter.
Finally, the supplies on the highway are constantly more expensive: in the service areas close to Milan, the average petrol price varies between 1.76 and 1.8 euros per liter, significantly higher than the hinterland distributors.
