At the Torricella di Magione dock, on the Umbrian side of Lake Trasimeno, nature provided a rare spectacle that hadn’t happened for years: the birth of seven swans from a nest monitored for weeks by residents and onlookers. The event took place over approximately 35 days of incubation, during which the female swan hatched the eggs while the male remained constantly near the nest, contributing to the protection of the area. On the morning of hatching, the first three eggs opened at dawn, while the other four were now close to being born under the attention of citizens and tourists. The dock, located in front of the church on the first pier, was transformed into a spontaneous observation point, with many people documenting the event with photographs and videos.
A community that protects the nest between vigilance and participation
In the days preceding hatching, the nest area was subject to spontaneous surveillance by the local community. Residents have installed informal signs with directions such as “swan’s nest” and “do not disturb”, creating a form of shared protection. Some inhabitants took turns in daily vigilance, especially to ensure the safety of the eggs. There were critical moments, including episodes of disturbance by some young people, quickly stopped by the intervention of those present. Despite the difficulties, the swan continued to hatch without abandoning the nest, contributing to the success of the hatching.
Lake Trasimeno between biodiversity and wildlife observation
Lake Trasimeno represents a rich ecosystem, characterized by a great variety of fish and bird species. Among the species present there are herons, mallards, coots, cormorants and wild swans, as well as numerous birds of prey and migratory birds that populate the area thanks to the favorable environmental conditions. In recent years, the presence of some species such as the cormorant has increased significantly, impacting the balance of the ecosystem. In this context, the birth of the seven swans in Torricella takes on an important symbolic value.
