The citizens win: Fileni condemned for the bad fumes from its chicken farms

Let’s go back to talking about Fileni farmsafter a new decision by the Court of Ancona regarding the nuisance fumes coming from the company’s plants.

Already last August, the Ancona Prosecutor’s Office had opened a case due to the strong “odorigenic emissions” reported by residents near the Ripabianca, Cannuccia, Ponte Pio and Monte Roberto factories.

Now the news has arrived that the Court of Ancona issued four criminal decrees of conviction against Fileni’s legal representative, Giovanni Fileni, for violation of article 674 of the Penal Code. The recognized crime is that of “dangerous throwing of things”, linked to the nuisance emissions that escape from poultry plants.

The residents’ protests, which have been ongoing since 2022, have finally led to a conviction, which marks an important step for the citizens of Vallesina. According to their lawyer, this is a significant finding, as these emissions are now officially considered harmful to the health and quality of life of residents.

We also remind you that this new sentence follows a series of investigations and complaints which concern not only bad smells, but also alleged building and office abuses, as highlighted by the investigations into the brand’s farms.

The new decision of the Court of Ancona it’s just the latest chapter in a long battle between residents and the company, which also includes investigations into the living conditions and slaughter of animals on farms, raised in the past by journalistic investigations and animal rights organisations.

Fileni’s reply

The company, for its part, has already announced that it will oppose. Francesco Mandolini, director of Fileni’s quality, environment and safety sector, declared that the company has always operated in compliance with authorizations and controls, reiterating that there is no evidence of pollution or exceeding harmful thresholds.

Mandolini underlined how the Court’s interpretation is based on subjective perceptions and defended Fileni’s commitment to investing in technologies useful for mitigating the environmental impact of intensive farming.

In short, the issue is destined to continue. The committee for Vallesina, already active for years in defending the rights of residents, has confirmed its intention to become a civil party in the future trial, should Fileni proceed with the opposition.
