The civic museums and these monuments of Rome have been free for all residents and university students since February: discover the list

The city of Rome is ready for a change of direction in policies for access to its cultural heritage. The new tariff system provides free entry to the civic museums and monuments managed by Roma Capitale for all residents of the Metropolitan City. At the same time, a two-euro ticket is available for tourists and non-residents to admire the Trevi Fountain, a measure designed to regulate inflows, protect the monument and guarantee a more orderly and informed use.

The provision will come into force from 1 February 2026. The administration presents it as a more balanced and sustainable model, capable of consolidating the protection and enhancement of the Capitoline heritage in a context of growing international attention.

Alongside the free admission reserved for Roman citizens, the new tariff system aims to strengthen the economic stability of the museum system. The additional resources will flow into the maintenance of the spaces and the conservation of the collections. The contribution requested from visitors is thus transformed into a form of shared responsibility, as well as a tool for improving the overall visit experience.

In addition to the Trevi Fountain, five other museum and monumental sites that were previously free will become subject to charges for non-residents.

The new tariff system

The innovations were illustrated at the end of December in the Sala Esedra del Marco Aurelio, in the presence of the Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, the councilor for Tourism Alessandro Onorato, the councilor for Culture Massimiliano Smeriglio and the Capitoline superintendent of Cultural Heritage Claudio Parisi Presicce.

Trevi Fountain

The introduction of the ticket for access to the Trevi Fountain reservoir, which we have already talked about in this article, was born from the experimentation started during the maintenance works concluded in December 2024. In that phase, crucial data on flows were collected and new visiting methods were tested to combat overcrowding and preserve the monument.

The experimental model now becomes definitive with a fee of 2 euros for entry to the internal perimeter area of the fountain. We remind you that the site records on average around 30,000 daily accesses, with peaks of up to 70,000 and an annual total of more than 9 million visitors.

Free and discounts

Access to the Trevi Fountain will remain free for:

Ticket payment will be required from 9am to 10pm and will also remain active on the first Sunday of the month.

To improve flow management and strengthen the protection of the monument, interventions will be carried out on the fence, agreed between the Capitoline Superintendence and the Special Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Rome. The works will begin on January 2nd and will take place exclusively at night.
