The device to which “translates” your dreams and transforms them into videos

A small device, printable in 3D and construction with components with a total cost of approx 300 eurospromises to Recreate the dreams told to the video on video. But be careful: it is not a thought reader. Dream Recorder, developed by the Dutch study Modemuse artificial intelligence to generate images starting from a vocal description of the dream made immediately after the awakening.

The idea is simple but fascinating: instead of entrusting our unconscious to the classic diary on the bedside table, we can “record” the images evoked by the words through an AI system. The result? Video with dreamlike yield, similar to moving paintingswhich reflect the emotional and visual content of the dream.

What can (and cannot) really do this tool

Despite the sensationalistic title with which some media have presented it, Dream Recorder or “look” dreams through brain waves or neural impulses. The process only starts After the awakeningwhen the user records a detailed description of the dream. At that point, the software analyzes language, transforms it into prompts and translates them into images generated by artificial intelligence, which are then assembled in a small video.

It is an open-source projectcompletely accessible: anyone can download the necessary files to print the device in 3D, buy electronic components and assemble it at home. The modem team wanted to share it freely to stimulate reflections on the role of technology in the exploration of the unconscious.

It is important to underline it: during sleep. For now, dreams remain the heritage of individual imagination, and what we see in the video is alone an artistic transpositionnot an objective reproduction of what we have dreamed of.

A dreamlike diary of the future?

The goal of this project is not commercial. Modem speaks of “speculative tool”, created to explore the possibilities of design and artificial intelligence. Despite the media enthusiasm, Dream Recorder, but it can become a creative tool for those who want to view their dreams, tell them or analyze them differently.

A technology that, despite all its limits, opens a glimmer on the fascinating relationship between language, imagination and memory. And perhaps it also makes us reflect on how will we are willing to share our inner worlds with machines.
