The Terme della Valle d’Aosta at the cost (almost) zero: the first is truly a gem

Majestic mountains, pristine woods and valleys, pure air that regenerates body and mind. The Aosta Valley is known above all for its peaks and spectacular landscapes, but there is also a lesser known side: that of the spas affiliated with the National Health Service (SSN).
It means that, with the simple prescription of the general practitioner and paying only the ticket, it is possible to access cycles of care that otherwise would cost much more.

Unlike regions such as Tuscany or Lazio, there are no “free pools” here in the midst of nature: the offer passes through organized factories, some of which also have a recognized healthcare part.

Here is an overview of what the Aosta Valley offers.

Saint-Vincent is one of the most populous municipalities in the Aosta Valley and preserves a central role in the tourist panorama of the region. In addition to an ancient history – here there are Roman remains and medieval testimonies – the country has become known above all thanks to its thermal waters. The discovery of the first source dates back to 1770, when the priest Jean-Baptiste Perret identified a source with beneficial properties. A second source was then discovered in 1826 by the engineer Despines, and from that moment the locality established itself as a thermal destination of great appeal, frequented by nobles, intellectuals and characters of the policy and economy of the 19th century. Its waters, rich in mineral salts, have always been associated with positive effects on digestive system, respiratory system and gastrointestinal problems.

Today the Baths of Saint-Vincent represent a point of reference not only for relaxation, but also for health. It is in fact the only plant in the Aosta Valley affiliated with the NHS. This means that those who present the prescription of the general practitioner can access thermal treatments by paying only the ticket, with the possibility of undertaking therapeutic cycles aimed at different pathologies: digestive disorders, respiratory diseases, orl problems and some gynecological inconvenience. Before the start of the treatments there is a free medical-test exam, which establishes the type of care that best suits the patient’s needs. The affiliated treatments are available in the summer, from the beginning of July to the end of September, a limited period that must be scheduled in advance.

The structure is not limited to the medical part: alongside the care, in fact, we find internal and external thermal swimming pools with water heated between 27 and 36 degrees, relaxation areas, panoramic terraces on the valley, sauna paths and steam baths, as well as aesthetic and massotherapy services. A mix between wellness and health that makes the spa of Saint-Vincent a point of reference in Valle d’Aosta.

Reaching them is simple: in the car the motorway exit is that of Châtillon-Saint-Vincent, while by bus the connection from Aosta takes less than an hour.

Terme di Pré-Saint-Didier

Those who think of the Valley spa immediately imagines Pré-Saint-Didier. This small village at the foot of Mont Blanc has become one of the most photographed and frequented destinations over the years, thanks to its thermal waters and the spectacular position. The hot water sources were already known in Roman times, but it is in the seventeenth century that they begin to be exploited for therapeutic purposes. The actual plant was built in 1834 and for a long time attracted illustrious visitors, including the members of the Savoy house. In the past there was even a casino inside the same building, confirming the tourist and exclusive vocation of the place.

Today the QC Terme di Pré-Saint-Didier are a point of reference for those looking for an immersive experience between well-being and nature. The offer is wide: toning waterfalls, whirlpools with thermal water, sauna paths and rooms dedicated to relaxation. The element that affects the most is the possibility of immersing yourself in the panoramic outdoor tanks, enjoying a spectacular view of Mont Blanc and surrounding mountains. The atmosphere is unique and difficult to replicate elsewhere.

Unlike Saint-Vincent, however, Pré-Saint-Didier is not affiliated with the NHS. Here there are no recognized health care, but only wellness paths. The costs are proportionate to the fame of the place: the evening entry starts from 54 euros, while the daily one and without time limits reaches 74 euros. The times go from Monday to Thursday (9-22), on Friday (9-23), on Saturday (8-23) and on Sunday (9-22). Reach Pré-Saint-Didier is simple: in the car just go out to Morgex and follow the road to Courmayeur; Alternatively there are active buses connections.

Terme Monterosa spa in Champoluc

Moving to the Val d’Ayas, we find Champoluc, a hamlet of the municipality of Ayas and access door to Monte Rosa. This location is surrounded by woods, mountains and landscapes that change with the seasons, and is known both for winter sports activities and for the possibility of living relaxing experiences in contact with nature. In this context, Monterosa Spa is inserted, a modern center designed for those who want to combine holiday and well -being.

The structure was designed to welcome not only adults, but also families with children. Here, in fact, the little ones can already access from one year of age, with dedicated areas and 34 -degree heated swimming pools designed for them. The Wellness offer is varied: there are internal and outdoor pools with whirlpools and cervical jets, a swimming tank, a panoramic relaxation area that allows you to feel immersed in nature, and a spa area with Finnish sauna, bio sauna, Turkish baths, hot and cold tanks, ice waterfall and whirlpool tub. For those looking for a more complete experience, it is possible to request personalized massages and treatments.

Unlike Saint-Vincent, Monterosa Spa has not affiliated with the NHS: it is a private wellness center, so the costs are borne by the customer. The rates vary according to the day: 37 euros from Monday to Friday, 49 euros on weekends and holidays, up to 55 euros in the period between Christmas and Epiphany, with inputs lasting 4 hours (excluding kit). The opening hours go from Monday to Thursday from 10 to 20, on Friday from 9 to 20, on Saturday from 9 to 18 and then from 19 to 23, while Sunday from 9 to 19.

Getting to Champoluc is quite simple: in the car you take the Verrès motorway exit and the Val d’Ayas dates back, but there are also bus connections from Aosta and the main locations in the Valley. In this way, Monterosa Spa becomes a destination accessible to anyone who wants to spend a day of wellness immersed in the mountains, without giving up comfort and services.

Terme di Cogne

BELLIVUE Hotel & SPA

Cogne, in the southern part of the Aosta Valley, is a country that extends on a large surface and is famous for being the door of the Gran Paradiso National Park. An elegant village, surrounded by meadows and mountains that in winter are transformed into cross -country ski slopes and in summer into hiking routes. Here is the Bellevue Hotel & Spa, a high -level structure that offers its guests a refined wellness area.

The center includes two heated swimming pools (32 and 34 degrees), open all day and also accessible to children’s guests of the structure, various types of whirlpools, eight saunas and steam baths, two caves and the so -called “clay cellar”, an innovative aesthetic path. To this are added body and face treatments, paths for couples and targeted massages. The experience is designed to guarantee total well -being, but is reserved for the guests of the hotel, without any agreement with the NHS. To reach Cogne, exit in Aosta – Saint Pierre and continue along the panoramic road that leads to the town.

Bard spa

At the entrance of the Aosta Valley we meet Bard, a small medieval village counted among the “most beautiful villages in Italy”. Here time seems to have stopped: narrow alleys, stone houses and the imposing fort that dominates the valley. A small but suggestive spa was obtained inside the hotel in Gallias, also open to those who do not stay in the structure.

The wellness area is collected but treated in detail: a tub reminiscent of a natural niche dug in the rock, with waterfall, sauna, emotional showers and relaxation area. It is a perfect place for those who want to join the visit to the village and the fort with a few hours of relaxation. Also in this case there are no agreements with the NHS: the services are exclusively private and included in the hotel package or bookable separately. Bard is easily accessible: the highway passes not far away and the Hone-Bard railway station is just five minutes walk from the historic center.

Is it really better?

If you are looking for thermal treatments affiliated with the NHS, in Valle d’Aosta the choice is simple: Baths of Saint-Vincent.
All other structures-from Pré-Saint-Didier to Champoluc, up to Cogne and Bard-remain excellent destinations for relaxation and wellness, but do not allow you to save through health ticket.
