These are the best extra virgin olive oils according to the Swiss test (one costs less than 10 euros)

When we buy organic extra virgin olive oil we think we make the best choice, but it is not always the case. The test conducted by the Swiss magazine K-Tipp together with the TV broadcast Kassenturz has reserved unexpected surprises: while the organic manor oil conquered the first place, the biological one of Lidl was completely rejected.

The eleven experts who conducted blind tasting on 13 oils found flavors “stagnants and muddy” in the Naivenes Olivenöl Extra Bio oil from the Primadonna brand of Lidl. A verdict without appeal: the product was judged so defective that it does not even deserve the wording “extra virgin”.

What does “extra virgin” really mean

The “extra virgin” classification should represent excellence in olive oil. To obtain this denomination, the olives must be only cold squeezed, without ever exceeding 27 ° C. During the whole process of pressing and processing, the use of chemicals is prohibited, thus guaranteeing a natural and fresh flavor.

Yet, as this test shows, the simple presence of the label does not automatically ensure quality. Manufacturers often acquire and mix olives of different origins, making it difficult to maintain high standards.

The test winners: quality at every price

The first place went to the Italian Oil Manor Bio with 7 points out of 10, followed by the Iliad Greek oil sold by Coop with 6.6 points. However, both have an important price: over 15 euros per liter.

But there is good news for those looking for quality without spending too much. Bio Natura di Aldi oil, which costs about 10 euros per liter, has obtained 5.6 points conquering the “good” evaluation. Experts described it as fresh, with pleasant hazelnut notes.

Improvements compared to the past

By comparing the results with previous tests, a positive trend emerges. In 2020 seven oils on sixteen were insufficient results, while in 2016 even nine on sixteen had not passed the exam. Today the situation has definitely improved.

Some products are confirmed stable over time: Migros Monini oil and Coop’s Naturaplan continue to be reliable. On the contrary, Lidl’s Primadonna had already disappointed in the 2020 test, confirming persistent quality problems.

How to recognize a quality oil

A defectless extra virgin olive oil must perfume and know of green olives not yet ripe. The best products, just like large wines, offer complex aromatic experiences with notes that recall herbs, tomato, almonds or exotic fruits.

A good oil must also be spicy and pepper, with a aftertaste that can occur after a few seconds. These characteristics, far from being defects, are instead distinctive signs of quality and freshness.
