These are the walks you can do in November and December (even for one or two days)

Walking immersed in nature is not just a summer activity, on the contrary, with the August sun it is also an activity that is more tiring and dangerous. But who said that in autumn or winter you can’t set off on a journey, even a short one?

Even in autumn and early winter there are routes that offer breathtaking scenery, pure air and the pleasure of trekking. In particular, November and December are ideal months to enjoy the colors of the foliage, the quiet of the low seasons and temperatures that are often perfect for walking without too much effort. However, let’s remember the importance of good equipment (the one for every season).

Here are three splendid paths to discover in Italy, ideal for these months.

Path of the Wayfarer, from Lecco to Colico (Lombardy)

This route, which winds along the shores of Lake Como, is perfect for those looking for an easy route but full of suggestive views. About 45 km long, the Sentiero del Viandante winds through woods, picturesque villages and breathtaking views of the lake.
An itinerary suitable for everyone, which becomes slightly challenging if tackled in 3 days rather than 4. Intermediate stops include Lierna, Varenna and Dervio, with a short detour inland to Genico.

November is the ideal time to travel it: the fresh air and warm autumn colors make the experience unique, with the foliage painting the woods in golden shades. Thanks to the widespread public transport from Lecco, it is also easy to organise.

Via dell’Essenza, Elba Island (Tuscany)

stages via essence

The Island of Elba is enchanting in every season, but autumn makes it even more special. The Via dell’Essenza is a 67 km coastal walk, divided into 8 stages, which embraces the entire island. Each route takes its name from a botanical essence and is inspired by the month in which it blooms.
Designed by the Acqua dell’Elba Foundation in collaboration with Legambiente, the route offers an immersive experience in nature, with a constant view of the sea and paths suitable for hikers of all levels, families and school groups.

Walking along the beaches and paths of Elba, admiring flora and fauna, is a relaxing and regenerating experience. The sections vary from 6 to 15 km, perfect for walking calmly, enjoying the magic of the landscape.

Cammino Materano, from Bari to Matera (Puglia, Basilicata)

The Cammino Materano is an experience that combines the pleasure of trekking with the discovery of places rich in history and spirituality. The classic route of the Via Peuceta extends for approximately 170 km and connects the Basilica of San Nicola in Bari with the famous Sassi of Matera, crossing suggestive villages such as Altamura and Gravina.

November is the ideal month to tackle it: the mild climate allows you to fully enjoy the journey, avoiding the summer heat. You pass through olive groves, plains, oak and conifer forests, as well as rock churches and karst blades.
This route is not just a physical journey, but also an opportunity to reflect and slow down, immersed in the authentic beauty of Southern Italy.

Francis’ Way: from Rieti to Greccio, a journey between nature and spirituality

The stretch that connects Rieti to the Sanctuary of Greccio is one of the most significant of the Way of Francis. This route, approximately 13 km long, crosses an area rich in charm, immersed in nature and full of history. Walking here means retracing the steps of Saint Francis, who chose these places to create the first living nativity scene in 1223, giving life to a tradition that today is a symbol of peace and sharing throughout the world.

Starting from Rieti, you pass through lush woods and narrow roads that wind through fields and valleys, where the quiet is interrupted only by the singing of birds and the rustling of leaves. This stretch is particularly pleasant in winter, when the fresh air and soft light create a cozy and almost magical atmosphere. Each step leads towards Greccio, a small medieval village perched on the hills, which houses the famous sanctuary dedicated to the nativity scene.

The arrival is an impactful moment, the Sanctuary of Greccio stands majestically, with its simple and suggestive architecture that seems to merge with the rock. From the terrace you can enjoy an extraordinary view of the valley below, a panorama that invites contemplation and silence. A visit to the sanctuary allows you to immerse yourself even more in the spirit of the place, with spaces that tell the story of Saint Francis and his vision of a simpler and more authentic world.

This path can be tackled in 4-5 hours and offers a complete experience that combines the pleasure of trekking with an inner journey. Perfect for those looking for a break from the frenetic pace, it is a path that invites you to slow down, listen and rediscover the profound connection with nature and with yourself.

Via degli Abati: the stage from Bobbio to Coli

The stretch of the Via degli Abati that connects Bobbio to Coli is a route of approximately 12 km that combines nature and history, offering an immersive experience in the heart of the Piacenza valleys. Starting from Bobbio, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, famous for the Ponte Gobbo and the Abbey of San Colombano, you walk along paths that cross oak and chestnut woods and offer breathtaking views of the hills and mountains.

This route, with medium difficulty, is perfect to be tackled in 4-5 hours. The uphill sections, although not particularly demanding, require a minimum of preparation, but the beauty of the views repays every effort. While walking, moments of tranquility alternate between nature and views that open onto the surrounding valleys, giving a unique feeling of peace.

The arrival in Coli is equally evocative, this small village surrounded by greenery offers enchanting views of the Apennines and a cozy atmosphere, ideal for concluding the journey with a regenerating break. Winter gives this route a particular magic, with the silence of the season which enhances the beauty of the landscapes and invites reflection.
