The Rauncolus was elected “summer bulb of the year 2025” by Ibulb, part of Royal Anthos, the Dutch Royal Association that represents companies in the sector of flower bulbs and nursery products. A splendid flower, with bright colors and the elegant shape, which has been able to conquer the hearts of many gardening enthusiasts.
A protagonist of the garden
The ranuncle (Ranunculus Asiaticus) is famous for full and compact flowers, available in a wide range of shades: from brilliant yellow to orange on, passing through delicate rose and intense red. This chromatic variety allows you to create unique combinations in the garden, on the balcony or on the terrace. Furthermore, thanks to their beauty and durability, the ranuncles are perfect as cut flowers to embellish the interiors of our homes.
Main features
Rauncolcolo plants reach a height between 15 and 35 cm, with flowers that can have a diameter of up to 7.5 cm. The dimensions make them perfectly suitable for domestic cultivation, both in flower beds and in pots, while large versatility allows them to adapt to different garden styles, from classic to modern.
Cultivation tips
Cultivating the ranuncoli is a rewarding activity and within everyone’s reach. Just respect some suggestions to obtain a lush flowering:
An ally for biodiversity
In addition to the unspeakable beauty, the Raunculo plays an important role in promoting biodiversity. In fact, its flowers attract numerous pollinating insects, such as bees and butterflies, effectively contributing to the balance of the garden ecosystem. So, if you decide to cultivate a ranuncol, in addition to enjoying splendid blooms, you can also support local fauna!
Summer bulb of the year
The election of the “summer bulb of the year” is an annual initiative promoted by Ibulb with the aim of inspiring and informing gardening enthusiasts on the versatility and beauty of the summer bulbs. In previous years, this recognition was attributed to flowers such as the Asian lily in 2024 and the barrel in 2023. The choice of the ranuncol for 2025 underlines the growing popularity of this flower and its ability to adapt to different decorative needs.
Historical curiosities
The cultivation of the ranuncle in Italy has ancient roots. Already in 1592, Father Agostino del Ricco documented the presence of different varieties of ranuncol in the Florentine gardens. This long tradition testifies to appreciation for the plant in our country and its ability to adapt to different climatic and environmental conditions. We also find testimonies on the ranuncle also in ancient times: the ranunculle has Asian origin and was known by the Turks – they called it “double flower of Tripoli” – by the Greeks (with the name of Batrachion) and by the Romans (we find the fridge in the writings of Apuleius, mentioned as “the wicked grass”, because of its toxicity, and in those of Pliny, which reveals Greek etymology – Batrachion – and the meaning of “small frog”).
Attention to toxicity
It is important to remember that some species of ranunculle contain toxic substances, such as anemonine, which can cause skin irritations or problems if ingested. Therefore, it is advisable to handle the plant with caution, using gloves during plantation or pruning operations, and ensure that pets and children do not come into direct contact with it.
2025 is the year of the ranunculus
For 2025, the Rauncolus represents an excellent choice for those who want to enrich their green space. The strong points? Undeniable aesthetic beauty – a real explosion of colors – and ease of cultivation.
