The Council of Ministers has approved a bill that introduces a financial contribution for cohabiting family caregivers, i.e. those who assist a non-self-sufficient relative on a daily basis. The bonus can reach up to 400 euros per month, paid quarterly or semi-annually, and represents the first organic economic recognition for those who provide non-professional assistance in Italy.
The text of the bill provides that the benefit is intended for those who assist for at least 91 hours per week, with an annual income of less than 3 thousand euros and an ISEE of less than 15 thousand euros. The idea is to support those who dedicate time and energy to caring for vulnerable family members, officially recognizing a social role of great value.
The types of assistance and protections
The bill introduces a system of differentiated protections depending on the number of hours. In addition to caregivers with a maximum load of 91 hours, benefits are also provided for those who assist for 30 to 90 hours or from 10 to 29 hours per week. The role of the non-live-in caregiver is also recognised, starting from 30 hours per week.
The measures include parental leave for those who care for minors, holidays and solidarity leave from colleagues, psychological support, flexibility on working hours, smart-working and recognition of skills acquired as a professional qualification in the social and healthcare sector.
For young people, benefits are provided for study, civil service and school-work paths.
How to request the bonus and allocations
To access the contribution it will be necessary to register on the INPS website, with registrations open from September 2026. The amount of the amount will depend on the number of requests and will be paid until the funds are exhausted. For 2026, 1.15 million euros are allocated for the INPS platform, while for 2027 and 2028, 250 and 253 million euros respectively are expected to support family caregivers.
