It asks you to sit down, turn off the need to control and let the film come to you, without filters. Where “closed box” cinema was born
It all started abroad with the best-known formulas that speak English. ODEON presents its Screen Unseen as a screening of highly anticipated pre-release films, with one crucial detail: audiences don’t know which title they’ll see until the start. AMC, in the United States, pushes the same idea by promising a “never seen before” film at a reduced price and only communicating the rating in advance. The rest remains under wraps until showtime.
Because it works so well
The strength of the format does not only lie in the mystery. It lies in the liberation from the hierarchies that now govern every cultural choice: online voting, hype, prejudice towards the director, suspicion towards a genre. On an evening like this you don’t choose the title that confirms your tastes: you accept being moved elsewhere. And so cinema returns to being what it should always be: a collective experience, full of anticipation, small risks and reactions shared in real time.
A model that also arrives in Italy
And now Italy also wants to try this experience. Bringing the format to our country is Circuito Cinema with the Mystery Film events: exclusive preview, no title, no plot, just surprises. On the official website we read how it will be a fixed appointment, every first Monday of the month at 9pm, experienced as a real “blind date”.

Mystery Cinema puts a crack in this perfect and slightly suffocating mechanism. It reminds you that you don’t always need to know ahead of time to enjoy a story.
