An hour from Rome there is a village with a waterfall in the historic center: it is unique in all of Europe

In Isola del Liri, a small town in the province of Frosinone (about an hour’s drive from Rome), there are two surprising waterfalls located right in the heart of this splendid island formed on the Liri river. These waterfalls have been defined as one of the 10 Italian natural wonders.

The Liri river, dividing into two branches, in fact, gives life to two picturesque waterfalls, one is the Cascata Grande, the other smaller one is the Cascata del Valcatoio. Both are framed by a landscape rich in vegetation where Castello Boncompagni Viscogliosi dominates immersed in the park.

The Great Waterfall flows from a natural rock for approximately 28 meters and depending on the seasons, its waters are rich and full or quieter and less abundant. In the historic center, therefore, visitors cannot help but be fascinated by this splendid creation of nature which is also the symbol of all the inhabitants of Isola del Liri.

In the evening the scenery is even more suggestive:

The best points from which to admire it

The most evocative way to enjoy the spectacle of the Great Waterfall is to look out from the Napoli Bridge, onto Corso Roma, which dominates the entire waterfall. Another unmissable observation point is the terrace of the Eustachio Pisani Gallery, which is located a few meters from the curtain of water and offers an almost dizzying close-up perspective. In the evening, then, the waterfall is transformed thanks to LED lighting which makes it scenographic in every season of the year, while the blue hour, when the sky begins to darken, is considered the most photogenic moment for those who want to take the perfect shot home.

The Liri river originates in Abruzzo, at the foot of Mount Camiciola near Cappadocia, passes through several villages and crosses the border into Lazio, just over 100 kilometers from the capital. The pinnacle of beauty is reached precisely in the Cascata Grande, the only example in Europe of a waterfall in the center of the city.

A village that comes alive with music in summer

Isola del Liri is not just a naturalistic jewel to be admired in silence: in the summer months the village transforms into a small open-air stage. Rock in Liri takes place at the end of June, with artists from the indie and Italian rock scene performing in the central squares, while at the beginning of July comes the Liri Blues Festival, one of the most important blues events in Europe, founded way back in 1988. It is not uncommon, during these events, to find yourself listening to a concert with the roar of the waterfall in the background, a more unique than rare mix of live music and natural spectacle.

In short, truly a magical landscape not to be missed!
