The Roman theater of Claterna

The Roman theater of the city of Claterna, 15 km from Bologna, is recognized as a monument that testifies the ancient splendor and the strategic role covered by the center since the second century AC in commercial terms and in terms of privileged relationships with Rome.

In fact, the place is a relatively recent discovery: the monument has been initially identified thanks to a series of aerial photos, and some targeted and limited size investigations, conducted between 2017 and 2019they ascertained its existence, but its entire rediscovery began to September 2023 With the activity launched by the Superintendency of Bologna thanks to a financing of the Ministry of Culture of 450 thousand euros.

From 2023 to today, archaeological excavations have revealed a medium -sized building, with a cavea with a diameter of 64 meters and one maximum hypothesized capacity of 2,500 spectators.

The recent finds

Among the treasures that emerged thanks to the last excavation campaign, archaeologists underline in particular a Murrina of the first century AD in colored glass part of a jewel depicting a theatrical mask, but also other splendid g so as well as some gold and silver coins, which confirm the ancient importance, including commercial, of the site.

For the three-year period 2025-2027 were another 600 thousand euros allocated for the restoration, enhancement and reuse of the theater. So other surprises may come.
