The weekend of January 24-25 will bring significant disruption for those traveling by train across Italy. For an entire day, from 3pm on Saturday to 3pm on Sunday, the country’s railway network will suffer a significant interruption in the Florentine stretch between Rifredi and Campo di Marte.
The cause is not a strike, but planned works to replace the road overpass called Ponte al Pino. Rete Ferroviaria Italiana will also exploit this interruption to renew exchanges at the Santa Maria Novella station.
The consequences for travelers will be significant: available trains will be reduced by half, while those crossing Florence will have to get off, take a replacement bus and get on another train. This transfer will take approximately three quarters of an hour. To manage the flow of passengers, 24 coaches will be used, with groups of six coordinated vehicles for each convoy.
Trenitalia and Italo have limited ticket sales to prevent overcrowding. Some Intercity trains will avoid Florence completely, but will extend travel times by up to two hours. Tuscan regional trains will also suffer limitations in their routes.
This intervention is only the first of a series: two more railway interruptions are already planned in July, which will last several days each. The construction site will conclude in November with the inauguration of the renovated bridge.
