The golden cage of co-living: at least 1200 euros per month for a room in Milan

“After New York, Brussels, Paris, Madrid, London and Luxembourg, the co-living accommodation network specializing in the provision of furnished homes, with private bedrooms and shared living spaces, has finally arrived in Milan with the opening of his first home Dateo 5, a splendidly renovated Art Nouveau-inspired building from 1907, measuring 700 square metres, characterized by a majestic wisteria on the facade”.

And so, for 24 hours now, this news has been going round and round on the web: arrives “finally” in the Milanese capital – and where else? – the first co-living experiencea form of housing in which each resident shares resources such as electricity, gas, water and appliances.

It is who created it Cohabsthe international community specializing in supply of furnished houseswith private bedrooms and shared living spaces. But what is it specifically? And how much does it cost?

Co-housing vs co-living

Unlike co-housing, which is based on a real and profound sense of communityco-living is based more on single management of spaces, on more limited common places, on fewer collective decisions and on a shorter duration of accommodation.

Co-living in Milan

The house made available by Cohabs includes 27 bedrooms (twenty of which were already sold out at the opening) renovated, with custom-made furnishings and air conditioning, a large common garden with hammocks, a seating area, a barbecue, a wood-burning oven and a large table.

Furthermore, there is a gym, a cinema room, a laundry room and a living room with both private and common spaces where all residents can have lunch and dinner, work, make friends and exchange their unique life experiences.

The renovation has preserved the historic character and the rooms are rented on average for a year by young workers who then leave for another country. Often, in fact, as Cohabs says, approximately 70/80% of those who rent such accommodation are foreigners.

Is it sustainable?

Well, in many respects yes, because, first of all, each resident shares resources such as electricity, gas, water and appliances. Furthermore, in the case of Milan, an old abandoned building was renovated and renewable energy was used to reduce emissions and promote responsible energy consumption. The Belgian company, in any case, has obtained the “B Corporation” certification.

Ok, but how much does a Cohabs room in Milan cost?

There are 3 room types at Milano Dateo 5:

And they have costs that vary from 1,196 to 1,580 euros per month. The cost includes weekly cleaning, connection, broadband Wi-Fi, TV streaming platforms, monthly bills and council taxes.

All beautiful, beautiful, but nothing resolved in our opinion. In this way, especially to the detriment of away students or young people with precarious and unstable jobs. The logic, as Cohabs himself says, is that more than anything else facilitate the rapid passage of peopleabove all foreignin a capitalist vision that the Milan to drink. It’s the market, guys.
